    “Yeah yeah,” Steve mutters, sits up. He can already feel a bruise forming on his back where he’d landed hard on a couple of rocks. “Be proud of yourself. I get it, you like Bucky better and I ain’t him-- join the club, that’s usually how it goes-- but I’m who you got for now. You wanna eat, right?”

    Charles bleats louder, frustrated, and Steve pushes himself to his feet. The other goats are idling about, apparently oblivious to the fact that their 50 pound friend had managed to trample a 200 pound man. Steve rolls his eyes, brushing off what he can reach of himself and pointing an accusing finger at Charles.

    Steve came back.

    Bucky couldn’t believe his eyes as he saw him standing on the platform. Everyone but them smiled, proud of another successful mission, satisfied they didn’t lose Captain America to the quantum realm. But Bucky knew what Steve sought to do, and wondered what could’ve ever stopped him…surely nothing could’ve ever changed his mind.

    Steve turns to him with a warm smile covering his face. How many years could it have been? A soft sense of betrayal bubbles deep within him, “What are you doing here?”

    Sam and Bruce’s celebration dies the moment those words leave his mouth. Steve turns to them and asks for some space as he steps down the platform. He leaves behind a leather suitcase where he had been standing.

    “Let’s go for a walk.”
