Summary
“Didn’t think I’d get this far,” Kris tells Dess.
“Hey.” Dess taps their nose, and they peer up at it through their bangs, the vibrant brightness of her face. “I’m glad you’re here, harbinger. You’re going to figure this out.”
Kris hums, noncommittal. Somewhere halfway across the country their friends are finishing up final exams. A whole year out there, learning new things, living new places. So many things they’ve seen that Kris never has, never will. Certainly, their friends have traveled further beyond the bounds of Hometown than they ever have. Into some world that surely cannot exist. Some reality that doesn’t include them.
They know, of course, that theirs is a problem that can never be solved.
(When they’re ten years old Kris Dreemurr is shown a video by their mother. It is of a coyote that has been raised by a dog mother, with dog siblings, in a human house.)
On surviving your end and what comes next.

Summary
Their hand wrapped around the plastic handle, gripping it tight. The knife only has one purpose, after all. It was supposed to have one purpose.
But the urge—an urge Kris thought they buried, that they healed from—is back in full force. And it hasn’t stopped festering, hasn’t stopped crawling beneath their skin.
The need for release, an outlet to all of this. They shouldn't. This was the last time, they told themselves; no more, they can't do this again.Kris promised him.

Summary
“S'not your fault that—”
“—I hurt you,” Susie finished. She chewed on the concept, the edges of her voice frantic, her throat thick. “Because you deserved it.”
“Yes.” Kris pressed her hands against their chest. They smiled in a way that failed to be reassuring. Each desperate breath shuddering through their lungs confirmed everything Susie didn't want to know. “S’fine. It’s okay.”
Kris burned like a charred pan straight out of the oven, or an oil fire stoked by liquor. Susie reeled away. “You—you were trying to set me up,” Susie accused, trying to edge words around the chasm opening in her gut. “You were trying to get me to hit you.”
Kris wants Susie to hurt them. They need her to hurt them. Susie isn't as on board with the idea as they are.

Summary
“It’d be weird,” they explain, shrugging. “We just aren’t that close, and-”
“AREN’T THAT- Ugh, alright, sure! Fuck it! I’ll bite! The hell’s up with you and Noelle!?”
That, Kris reflects, is a very good question. If Susie ever finds out what the answer is, they hope she’ll tell them, because they don’t have a single goddamn clue, themselves.
Every active force has a reactive one. If you force something deep inside you, it'll eventually come pouring out, just as forcefully as you concealed it. Kris finds that out the hard way.

Summary
The Angel always knew that this day would come. Banishment has always been an inevitability, so there is no reason to feel bad about it happening now. After a harrowing battle against the Knight, the Angel realizes that they are unwanted within this story. They have already been taught many times that at some point, it is time to let go of a world. This is how it must be. If Kris does not want them, then it must be time. After all, if their vessel does not want them, isn't the only winning move not to play?
With the Angel disconnected, Kris and Susie descend into a Dark World without knowing what fate has just befallen the world. The light that shines the way is gone, and not a single person knows why. The world moves on anyway while Kris, Susie, and Ralsei are all caught in the aftermath of the Angel's swift decision. Even with the light no longer shining brightly, maybe something can be salvaged from the dark.
