Summary
For a long time, Alec had felt like his life was held together by strings tied on him by the Clave, his parents, his siblings. Strings that pulled and tugged him in every which direction, heedless of the bruises and blood left behind. As much as they hurt, some days they’d been the only thing to hold him together.
That is, up until the moment Alec stood on the shores of Lake Lyn and faced the death of the one person who held a piece of his soul, and the lies that followed his mysterious resurrection.
There, on the shores of Lake Lyn, those strings finally pulled too hard, and Alec broke.
With the permission of the Inquisitor, and the help of the warlock who Alec had wanted so desperately to allow himself to fall for (and had been terrified to do more than smile at his flirting) Alec walked away from everything and everyone. He left New York behind and made himself a home in the small town of Prayer – a joke Magnus found particularly funny.
But, two years after that fateful night, Alec’s old life comes knocking, and those strings he thought he’d finally cut are tugging him home. Back to the place he never wanted to have to see again.
At least this time, he’s not facing it alone.

Summary
Magnus has always been a certain level of selfish, for all that the rare few friends he has will disagree and instead call him selfless. The truth is, he’s simply never had something he wants to keep enough for him to be truly selfish.
The world will be a more dangerous place for everyone, now that he has. Everyone but the man in his arms. For him, Magnus would raise hell itself or crucify heaven. For now however, he will continue to weave his webs and spin events to his satisfaction. Because for now, Alexander is safe and his and until the day that changes, the rest of the world beyond them will remain safe as well.

Summary
Alec immediately regrets the instinctive shift of his feathers, knowing how many Downworld throats have been slit open on nephilim wings, knowing how many times Magnus and his council must have seen that happen. But what’s done is done and moving them back would do nothing. Alec comes to a halt at a respectful distance from the High Warlock and waits. His arrival was without notice and is certainly unwelcome. By both nephilim and Downworld custom the next move belongs to Magnus alone.
“Tell me, Alexander Lightwood,” Magnus begins icily, and it’s no surprise that he knows Alec’s name. “What brings the Head of the New York Institute to my door, unarmed, runes inactive, and completely alone?”

Summary
‘“You can’t go alone Harry,” Hermione said, trying to lift herself to her feet but giving up with a squeak, “You need help!”
“No,” Harry said firmly, “This is my decision to run off to try and save Sirius, no one else’s - and you need help Hermione! Look at your ankle!”
“How are you even getting there?” Ron demanded, “'Cause if you want to floo, it looks like we both need to go back up to the castle,” he cried triumphantly.
The answer to his question came in the form of a sudden insistent tugging at the sleeve of Harry’s robe. He flinched back, and looked down to find the skeletal head of doe-eyed Thestral following the path of his hand in an attempt to lick off the blood that coated his arm. Harry froze for a minute, then grinned. He knew exactly how he was getting to London.’—
When Harry made the choice to leave his friends behind, and rescue Sirius from the Department of Mysteries on his own, he had never imagined what the consequences might be.

Summary
The sight of a small figure gently stroking Harry’s hair had him freezing in his tracks. His wand was out at once.
“Stop!” He barked, fear making his voice tight; enormous, watery blue eyes turned to peer at him, and he lowered his wand a little. A shuddering breath escaped him. He swallowed, “Hello, Dobby.”
“Hello, Draco Malfoy,” Dobby said mournfully, turning to look back at Harry and stroke his hair, “We is needing to get Harry Potter into a proper bed.”—
It had been a mistake, but it was easily the worst one of Draco’s life. He might never be able to atone for it, but trying to started with this: keeping an unconscious Harry safe and protected from the outside world at Spinners End. Snape had warned him that after what had happened, Harry might never wake, and that if he did, he wouldn’t be the same. It didn’t matter to Draco though. He would stay till the end, no matter what that end might be.
