It should have been a simple arrangement.
Ace was going to need help covering expenses in his new place, and Nancy was slowly suffocating under the double parental presence of Carson and Ryan. So they’d decided to move in together (totally platonically, of course) in a quick, simple discussion over boxed wine and linguine one night after closing up The Claw.
(Too much wine, Nancy would discover the next day when she was staring at the blindingly white lease agreement through dark sunglasses and a throbbing headache.)
After all, they were already coworkers. Friends. Members of a crew that repeatedly saved the town from supernatural shenanigans and each other from certain death. So what if they add roommates to the list? How much harder could it be when they already shared so much of their lives?

I read this fic again recently and it is still such a delight. I giggled like a maniac the whole way through. And the figurative language makes it even more fun! What a wonderfully tropey one-shot.

Literally the BEST Maleval fic I have ever read. An absolute must-read.
This is one of my favorite Maleval fics of all time. I’ve read it all the way through three times. What I really enjoy about thornvale’s writing is the grace given to all of the characters; they’re really allowed to feel and process their emotions, and everything feels earned.

Summary
Koschei's name was drawn the year before hers, and he slaughtered almost half the tribute field personally, claiming the first victory for their District and becoming an overnight sensation. Media darling Caesar Flickerman had dubbed him The Master, a title that stuck, and he plays his part well, but as soon as the cameras are off, darkness always comes floating back towards the surface. He mentored Theta while his own pain was still fresh, and dismissed her as a lost cause as soon as the second name was drawn. The other tribute for District 3 that year was Koschei's friend, classmate, and neighbor, and Koschei all but told her that he would throw her to the wolves and focus the entirety of his attention on supporting her male counterpart.
That favoritism did not matter in the end. His friend died first, and Theta won the shortest games on record. Thirty-six hours, one meticulously engineered mass slaughter, and it was over.
Fifteen years have passed since then, and he still has not forgiven her.

This Hunger Games AU lives in my brain RENT FREE. It is that good. If you like fake relationships in dystopian settings with characters that feel real, then this is the fic for you.
