“Shall we toast?" He didn’t wait for Reed to answer before he clinked their glasses together. “To new discoveries.”
It was the kind of toast Reed might have made himself, right after “to family.” Doom raised his glass in his direction and, still not quite sure what game it was they were playing now, Reed followed suit. Doom smiled.
“Very good,” he said, taking a sip of his wine. “Now tell me, Reed Richards – what brings you to this universe?”
“What else? New discoveries,” he said, parroting Doom’s toast.

Summary
The city is unusually quiet tonight. Oh, sure, he’s had his usual crimes: muggings, drug deals, a few break ins. Nothing special. Nothing that could possibly explain the thread of tension winding through him, slowly tightening like a noose. Ever since last night, his spidey senses have set off at a low, maddening hum, distracting him, needling him, filling him with a restless energy that’s robbed him of restful sleep. He’s used to dealing with his super powered anxiety, but this feels different somehow. More ominous. And what’s weirder is that other people seem to be a little more wary, a little more on edge than usual, too. Cops, firefighters, even one of the guys Peter caught snatching a purse commented on it from his web cocoon on a street light.
“You feel that, Spidey? The city’s all weird tonight. Feels like the whole place is holding its breath, waiting on something.”

“Um, actually,” Peter clears his throat, out of practice in such a thing, a thing he hadn’t even been good at before he’d stumbled into a life of complete isolation. “I was hoping– Well. Hm.”
“Spit it out, I haven’t got all day,” Jameson scowls, but he leans back in his chair, chews on the end of a pencil, looking like he has just about all the time in the world.
Perks of being the boss, Peter supposes.
“I was just going to ask– for my payment this time around,” Peter clears his throat again, nothing to swallow except his own grief, “I was wondering if you’d mind– giving me a slot in the obit section and just taking the cost out of my earnings. Sir.”

OR: Peter made a promise to himself the day he walked out of that bakery and didn't look back. It's not an easy one to keep.
