There was a man in the field. For a moment, Ronan’s brain didn’t process the shape because it’s not supposed to be there. Like a tree fallen across the road, or a large spider motionless on the wall, a man in a tattered shirt was standing in the pasture between the green black void of the forest, and the backyard of the Barns.
A stranger appears at the Barns, just looking for a ride to town. And some beer. And some money for the bus, probably.

Ilya pulls back first, breathing hard, eyes blazing down at Shane. He drags a thumb across Shane’s swollen lips. “Is your first time with a man?”
Shane huffs a wrecked laugh, chest rising and falling fast. “Definitely not.”
Ilya’s grin is sharp and almost feral. “Good. I want to hear you.”
Shane is a year younger than Ilya and they play for the same team.

Shane tries not to react to that. “Oh.”
“She’s old friend. From Russia. Her father was famous goaltender of Soviet team. She knows everything about hockey,” Rozanov continues.
“Cool.”
“She likes you very much.”
His patience snaps. What kind of fucking game is Rozanov trying to play? He was the one to enforce this casual relationship to begin with, and then he goes and invites Shane over to his house, tells him to stay over, and then wants to talk about women he likes? No, Shane can take a lot, but he doesn’t want to be jerked around like this.
So before he can convince himself out of it, he says, “Can I have her number, then?”
Rozanov blinks a few times. “What?”
Gotcha, asshole. “You said she likes me, so.” He shrugs as casually as he can manage like it’s no big deal. “Unless you two are…?”
“No, no, nothing like that,” Rozanov says quickly. “We are old friends, but nothing like that now.”
“…So I can have her number?” Shane pushes. He probably shouldn’t. “Unless it’d be weird—”
“Okay yes, I can—I will text to you,” Rozanov says.

Jeremy had been right on the mark with his initial assessment of satisfaction and pride; But if what he saw in Jean stroking over the detail of a brand-new motorbike was hunger?
