It has been VℓℓI [433.58] years since Adrian has heard their mate. Since the families of Erid’s first and, to this day, only interstellar crew have heard them. I+∀∀V+ℓ [85,416] days.
Even after all this time, Adrian can’t help but hope that the crew will return. That today will be the day that Erid will pick up the signals from the ship. "It takes me another moment before I realize that I wasn’t hurting from the fall. There’s no struggle to get air back into my lungs. I’ve tumbled end over end, and sort of landed upright. All my limbs are sprawled in every direction.
Rocky skitters down to my level, right up against the xenonite. “Grace fall! Hurt question? Okay okay okay?”
With all my brainpower, I focus on responding. 'Y-ye-es,' I manage to chirp. I freeze. Process.
That was definitely not English. Or any other human language. I didn’t move any muscles to speak.
'Y-ees,' I say again, and the same chirping note comes out. Inside me, I feel the shifting of five gas-filled… things. That note came from me. But it sounded like Rocky."...
In which Grace wakes up as an Eridian. And then a human. Eridian again.
Figuring out how to walk and sing is the first step. The rest will have to come later.

Ryland looks down at his best friend, eyebrow raised. Curiosity pushes the burgeoning tightness enough for him to ignore. "Yeah? What's that, Rock?"
"We can build onto the Hail Mary— a spaceship large enough to carry you, me, and other scientists. We go to Earth with you," Rocky trills. Ryland can't believe his ears. Rocky's carapace tilts in the way that means he's smiling. "We live on Earth, learn from the humans, and return in our own time."

"Last time you not say anything you lose arm. What is wrong, question?"
That phrase is starting to get on my nerves. I like some repetition most of the time but sometimes it's just grating. Part of me does feel bad. I'm being mean and I know it. But I'm too overwhelmed and tired and angry to calm myself down. "I'm not going to cut off my leg this time Rocky, I'm not crazy."
"Did not say crazy. Want to help. Job is to fix things."
