“Now, you remember what a ‘craniotomy’ is,” Martin sways the tool in his hands back and forth, and Malcolm thinks about how he couldn’t possibly forget. He nods as his eyes flutter between the bald head on the table and the serrated edge of the bit on the drill.
“Step forward,” his dad instructs, and Malcolm moves forward slowly, eyes still closed, until the back of the drill sits against his sternum. For stability, he recalls. “Finger on the trigger,” Martin tells him, and when the next words leave his mouth, his voice is suddenly very close to Malcolm’s ear. “And open your eyes.”

Summary
Malcolm Bright, a criminal profiler working as an NYPD consultant, gets called onto a case that on first glance appears to be a stand-alone murder. Quickly, it becomes clear that this murder is not a one-off, and Malcolm begins a frantic search to find out who is responsible for this child's death.
Asking for help from his father reveals an interesting predicament with Martin's new cellmate, and digging deeper into the suspicious activities surrounding the serial killer he's tracking only serves to bring torment to the people around Malcolm.
