“He’s a mess, his usually perfect hair is all out of place with strands sticking out in weird directions, like he’d been pulling on it. His clothes too— if it were anyone else Gavin wouldn’t see anything wrong with them, but Nines was different. He wouldn’t be caught dead without ironed slacks and a tucked in button up, the pretentious little shit. But here he was, an untucked tee with wrinkled jeans, and Gavin knew something was wrong.
There was also the wide-eyed, deer in the headlights look he wore and his harsh, sporadically blinking red LED that maybe clued Gavin in a bit more than everything else.”
Nines has a panic attack. Gavin helps him through it, even if he’d much rather be sleeping.

Summary
After closing Ada's case, Gavin and Nines return to normal life with the addition of their new relationship. However, love alone can't change Gavin Reed. It can't erase the struggles of his past or his hostile temperament, and his relationship with Nines pays the price.
Following yet another argument late at night, Gavin storms out of the precinct alone. He doesn't return to work in the morning, and a haunting clue suggests there may be more to Gavin's disappearance than a temper tantrum.
