Summary
Steve was an only child, and his parents barely acknowledged his existence. They started leaving him for business trips for weeks at a time when he was a toddler. Once he turned 13, his parents started leaving him home alone, no longer calling in a babysitter to stay with him. Steve had never had a relationship with his parents, or a sibling-esque relationship with any of his so-called friends. He can remember his sophomore year of high school, watching Jonathan and Will and feeling physically ill because he wanted that. He wanted a sibling that he could spend time with and talk to. But, he didn’t have that. Until Nancy Wheeler told him he was bullshit in some party bathroom and Dustin Henderson and the rest of his shithead kids weaseled their way into Steve’s life.
The one that he wasn’t expecting to feel such an overwhelming need to protect, however, was Max Mayfield.

Summary
Sex Ed course came once again, and, for the first time, Billy listened.
He listened, because it started to match and make sense with what Max’s little troup told him over and over again.
Apparently, it was biology which dictated that omega jewelry wasn’t just a futility or decoration, or even a signal that the omega was taken. It wasn’t a trade, sex for jewelry, like Neil had taught him all his life. No: scientists had found back in the sixties that omega jewelry has a soothing effect, especially during heat, as a reminder of love and affection; something tangible and available at all times, even when no one is.

Summary
Vaguely, over the sound of a bland pop song playing in the background, he hears the squeak of a pair of sneakers come to a halt at the other end of the aisle. He turns his head toward the sound… and promptly fumbles the tube of Pringles he’d been reaching for. He bats at it with his hand in a futile attempt at catching it, instead knocking it further toward the ground like a spiked volleyball.
He clears his throat.
“Um.” The tube rolls across the linoleum and comes to a stop at Tommy Hagan’s feet. Steve stares at it for a long, agonizing beat of silence, then he looks back up at Tommy’s face. “Sorry.”
Tommy raises his eyebrows, and Steve’s heart kicks in his chest.
Steve and Tommy haven't talked in nearly three years. After everything, maybe the best way forward is back.

Summary
For as long as Steve can remember, he’s been cleaning up Tommy Hagan’s messes.
Or to put it more accurately—Tommy has always been a mess, and Steve has been there to clean him up, every goddamn time.
(Steve helps Tommy calm down, accidentally putting him in subspace in the process)
