Summary
There are too many people, too much noise. Or rather too many people making too much noise.
Here, with all the vainglorious nobles soliciting him in the pursuit of his favors, his social energy goes down faster than the recaff pots in the Officers’ mess.
Carmine shamelessly uses a natural need as an excuse to untangle himself from the conversation and exits the throne room. Alas ! The corridors and garden are hardly any less crowded or noisy.
Without really thinking about what he is doing, he slips between two columns, behind the curtain leading to a service pathway.
There too, the space is buzzing with activities but it is more tolerable. He sighs with relief, leaning against the wall in a small alcove to clear the way. Closing his eyes for a minute, he rubs his temples, noticing only now the migraine muddling his thoughts.
An unexpected but very familiar voice brings him back to reality : “Carmine ? What are you doing here ? Is everything alright ?” Right before the Rogue Trader is Heinrix van Calox.
“Well, well, what have we here ? An agent of the Golden Throne lurking in the shadows… How… innovative!” jests Carmine with a cunning smile, immediately reverting to his irreverent persona. -

For herself. For Abelard and Cassia, wherever they may be right now.
For… Evanelia doesn’t dare think of the name of the one she might never see again. If only she would have been a bit more bold, a bit more brave, perhaps… But it is too late to regret unspoken words.
She shakes her head and focuses back on the immediate danger as the Scourge is calmly closing the distance with a sadistic grin.

Blood spatters Evanelia as a blade suddenly sticks out of the assassin’s torso. The xenos shrieks, feebly tries to fight back, blood dripping from their mouth. A gloved hand appears from behind, seizes the jaw and twists the neck, with a sickening sound of breaking bones. The creature collapses like a broken doll on the ground and its murderer steps over the corpse.
“What else now ? What other madness is coming for me ?” she thinks, pressing herself a little closer to the wall. Her vision is blurred and doubled. She hardly sees a tall, broad-shoulder figure clad in red and gold filling the space before her.
Evanelia grits her teeth.
A lie. A trick. Again.
Surely it is only another illusion if Heinrix’s voice full of worry is calling her name.
