A hitch of breath, then silence. “Good boy,” you say, almost without thinking, and there is a sharp sudden breath before you. The drag of air across your skin.

Summary
When Harry's job takes him to a crime scene with the body of a young boy who looks just like Cuno, his despair over the state of the world sets in again, and he starts to drink more and more. But Kim - his new partner - cannot lose someone he cares about again. He is determined to show Harry what it truly means to have a purpose.
With obvious expertise, Kim walks Harry through the immediately diagnosable faults with the car. For starters, she’s missing both her engine and battery, and her interior has been thoroughly picked clean of anything valuable, leaving her riddled with empty wounds where a radio or mileometer would be. Her paint is scratched, presumably from minor crashes or general damage at the scrapyard. Her windows are smashed, and one of her doors has such a large dent by the handle that it won’t close fully.
If she were Harry’s car, he’d probably leave her running with the unit door closed and let her pass away peacefully. But Kim’s hands are all over her, pointing out her every flaw like a surgeon determined to save her life.

The fourth-and-a-half thing is that Kitsuragi also wants to fuck Harry.
The fifth thing is that Kitsuragi is a patient man.
The sixth thing is that you also want to fuck Kitsuragi.
The seventh thing is that Kitsuragi figures this out the day you lean in to light his cigarette on the station roof. Your hand is shaking because Harry almost got the three of you fucking killed that day by being his stupid fucking bullheaded self, who cares if you caught a fucking murderer, and while he’s downstairs getting stitched up, you and Kitsuragi are up on the roof smoking. Your hand is shaking badly and Kitsuragi reaches out and grabs your wrist to steady it, the warmth smooth leather of his gloves on your bare wrist where your sleeve’s pulled up. YOU: “Do they really? Kim, is that true?”
KIM KITSURAGI: Kim shrugs a shoulder, as if to say, don’t ask me.
