- the feeling of being on the brink of a realization but never quite having a breakthrough.His fingers curled and uncurled around the air thoughtlessly, his brow twitching with a sticky, feverish trepidation that had nothing to do with Gavin Reed's hostility and everything to do with the dark, heavy circles under the girl's mascara smeared eyes and sickly pale skin. His mouth had gone frighteningly dry, tongue thick and clumsy, pressed up against the back of his perfect teeth as an unfamiliar feeling prickled at the base of his spine.
She took a sip of her stale coffee and continued to avoid his gaze, aggressively evasive, and Connor had the inexplicable, nauseating realization that the feeling gnawing at the back of his head was recognition.
Which was strange, because Connor had never seen her before.

Two melatonin tablets are dissolving under your tongue. You fight to keep your eyes open, watching Connor as he leans over your limp body, brows furrowed as he finishes fastening you in. His LED is a hesitant gold, and you're trying, through the fog, to keep an eye out for any red.
His eyes flick down to yours, cold concentration melting into fondness, like he's aware that you're trying to check in. One hand comes up to cup your cheek, thumb catching your lower lip just long enough for his gaze to darken. He's nervous, but far from unwilling.

Connor's mildly impatient, has been since he arrived asking for your assistance. Agitation rolls from him in waves.
"Thirium distribution has been irregular," he recounts, an edge of frustration. "The entire rhythm is off, and it's causing decreases in energy efficiency—"
He freezes for several heartbeats. He's done this a couple times since arriving, too.
"—and-lag-in-my-output." Connor's voice speeds without pitching up when he moves again. He seems to catch the error and grits his teeth.
"I already know what's wrong," he says. He'd be pacing if you hadn't instructed him to stay seated. You let him vent, eyes tracking him.
"Right, your regulator's screwy," you agree. You turn in your chair to your computer. "I'll still need to figure out what the specific problem is. Your model doesn't exactly have spare parts mass produced everywhere, so I'll just have to repair what you have."
