“I punched a wall.”
“You what?” Heyward looks truly shocked, like JJ isn’t the most energy charged kid he’s ever met. Like he doesn’t know JJ the way he pretends not to. Like JJ doesn’t bottle up his emotions until they boil over. He’s seen it for years, but sometimes it’s still hard to believe. “Why would you do that, JJ?”
“My best friend died.”
Or, the aftermath of 1x10 and the months that followed

“Did you hear me calling for you?” Eddie asks, unable to hide the mounting desperation — the slight quiver — in the rasp of his voice.
“Yes,” Buck answers. He drops his eyes to the dusty ground.
“Then why?” Eddie hates the way it sounds like begging as the question leaves his lips.
Buck pinches the bridge of his nose and winces as if he forgot about the bruises he has there. “You know, that’s the third time I’ve had to listen to a gun go off without having my eyes on you,” Buck says. “The third time I’ve heard a gunshot, knowing you were there, and had this sinking feeling that it was you who took the bullet.” Buck looks down and shakes his head. With a humorless chuckle, he murmurs, “Again.”

“If you wanted to see me that bad, you could’ve just asked me out.”
There’s a choked sound from the chair. A muffled laugh, quickly swallowed.
Buck’s eyes flick, just once, toward the chair, and then he flushes so fast it’s equal parts alarming and endearing.
“I’m fine,” he says, each word coming with its own zip code.
He always does that. It’s their routine, their little dance. He tries to bolt, she gives him a reason not to, without calling him out. He acts like it doesn’t hurt, she pretends she doesn’t notice the way his jaw tightens, the tremor in his hands.
This time, though, it doesn’t get that far.
“What you are is stubborn,” the guy in the chair says. If there’s meant to be an edge to it, Sam can’t find one. “You took a pretty bad hit to the head, Buck. The helmet came off. You should let them check you out.”
Buck rolls his eyes, but he doesn’t argue. Doesn’t even try.
That’s new.
Sam studies him for half a second, then gestures. “Okay, chin down.”or, Buck and Eddie being perceived by an ER nurse for a decade

“On the other side of this,” Eddie whispers. “Maybe we can try it.”
“Hm, okay,” Buck hums, apparently awake, but barely. “What are we tryin’?”
“I know now isn’t the right time. I’m not - - we’re not ready. But this next bit isn’t going to be pretty. It’s going to be hard. And I need you to know, so you have something to hold on to. So that I don’t forget what it feels like. What it felt like. We could - - we could try.”
Or, after the kidnapping, Buck goes through it. Eddie goes through it with him.

Summary
“Buck!” Buck’s name exploded from Eddie’s lips like a shot. He elbowed the sheriff off him and limped forward like he wanted to break out into a run.
Buck’s stomach dropped to his feet as he watched the sheriff snarl at Eddie’s back before his face dropped into shock. He drew his gun back out of his holster and Buck wheezed in a breath to call out a warning that got trapped somewhere in his throat.
“Torres!” The sheriff snapped.
A grunt of pain rained down on Buck like pieces of rubble on his too raw skin before the sound of a body hit dirt and a unforgiving arm wrapped around his windpipe.
Okay but what if Earl ended up using Buck as a human shield during the final showdown?

“I can’t lose you again.” The confession comes out cracked, pressed against Buck’s hair. “Do you understand me? I can’t. I can’t do that again.”
He is not even sure which again he means. There are too many.
Again like the shooting, when the world went white around the edges and all Eddie could think was Buck. Again like the lightning, when Buck’s heart stopped and took Eddie’s with it. Again like every moment Buck has ever been on the wrong side of a closing door while Eddie stood there, helpless and furious and praying to a God he only remembers when it’s Buck on the line.
Or Eddie holds Buck while they wait for help to arrive

JJ took the bet. He bet it on the crown, on one last treasure hunt. On the power of friendship and the idea of a father who might love him, choose him, want him. He bet it on himself. And lost.

It’s stupid, he tells himself it’s fine, he’s fine, it’s some dumb song, hold it together, be fuckin’ normal for once… then the scream comes, the chorus hits him full in the gut and he stops pretending.
Everything tilts three steps away from him. The warmth, the lights, the fire slide off to the edges. And his old bedroom floor rushes in.
He’s on his knees. No idea how he ended up there. The voice hits from somewhere above him, too loud. “You dumb little shit. Touch my stash again, I’ll snap your damn fingers.”
Dad's teeth grind and all JJ can think is bad… bad… get out.

Summary
After a catastrophic earthquake rocks Los Angeles, Buck throws himself into rescue mode, determined to keep moving no matter what his body says. A single misstep leaves him hurting, but he insists it’s nothing—until Chim notices the telltale signs of burnout and pain Buck can’t hide anymore. As aftershocks rattle the city and exhaustion catches up, the 118 closes ranks, refusing to let Buck push past his limits. What starts as “walk it off” becomes a lesson in trust, vulnerability, and letting found family carry you when you can’t. In aftermath, courage looks less like sprinting and more like stillness.

“I’m not in denial,” John B tells his doctor. “I know JJ’s dead.”
The old analogue clock ticks loud and incessant. It’s driving him nuts.
“Knowing a fact and accepting it are two different battles.” The clock gleams off his doctor’s glasses. Then she tilts her head, and the reflection shows the wall. “Some part of you won’t let go.”
John B slumps in his seat. “Your clock’s really loud,” he says.
Over in the corner, JJ rolls his eyes.

“Buck,” Eddie whispered, crawling in. “Hey. Hey, I’m here.”
Buck stirred, barely. His eyes fluttered open, unfocused.
“Eddie?” he rasped.
“I’ve got you,” Eddie said, voice thick. “Help’s coming. Just hold on.”
Buck’s fingers twitched, reaching weakly. Eddie took his hand, held it tight.
“You didn’t break the promise,” Eddie said, tears mixing with rain. “You’re here. I’ve got you.”

Summary
The world had gone quiet and still.
Danny Williams had always hated quiet. It meant something was wrong — a lull before the next gunfight, the split second before a perp made a run for it, the breath he’d always held before bad news. But this quiet was different. It stretched on and on, day after day, thick and heavy, pressing against the walls of the house and the inside of his chest until he could barely breathe.

Summary
The first time Buck heard Bobby’s voice, he thought he was already dead.
The world had gone strangely still around him, as if the chaos of the rescue had been switched off. One second there was the scream of metal, the thunder of collapsing concrete, the crackle of fire; the next, silence. He’d been thrown against the floor, pinned under a heavy beam, breath stolen from his chest. Pain radiated through him like fire, sharp and heavy at once.
And then—
“Easy, kid. I’ve got you.”
