Summary
In the heart of ancient Rome, Aziraphale is already considered odd; he runs a respectable bookshop that only hires freemen, refuses to marry, and stubbornly insists he has no need for slaves. So, naturally, olive oil salesman Gabriel gifts him one.
Crowley arrives sharp-tongued, ruddy haired and unimpressed by his new master's supposed 'kindness'.
Aziraphale resolves to do the only sensible thing: learn everything he can about manumission and set Crowley free.

Summary
Aziraphale scolded; Crowley teased. Aziraphale worried; Crowley promised, usually sincerely, that he knew what he was doing. They had done this dance for years, and it had always ended the same way - Crowley intact, Aziraphale shaken but reassured, the world carrying on.
Then, as if the universe decided it had had enough of Crowley’s playful defiance, his foot slipped.
