He tried to scramble to his feet but his legs were still clumsy and numb and all he could do was fumble, sitting upright on the damp concrete of a New York alley, fighting to breathe through the adrenaline-frenzied pounding of his heart. The voices were all speaking together but he couldn’t understand the words through the sound of his own panting, so he let them be drowned out.
Perhaps they would kill him, and perhaps he should care about that.
He didn't, much.

Summary
The simple solution is this: Palpatine isn't willing to entrust Skywalker's safety to anyone but the best. This results in the swapping of two battalions - one headed for Coruscant with one headed to Aranata - and in so doing, ends up with the perfect set of pawns in his hands.
Rex would very much like to keep as many of his boys alive as he can. Whether that takes the form of fudging numbers, taking their shifts and work, or keeping his missing time a secret, he's willing to do whatever it takes.
Fox, on the other hand, would very much like to know where Fives went.
