She was finally clear of the group now, ducking between narrow, crooked trees and large boulders. The silence grew more deafening as she walked deeper, until she realized she couldn’t hear anything except the sound of her own breathing. Finding the nearest rock, she flopped down with her back against the cold surface.
The tears she’d been holding back for so long, for some sliver of hope, finally released themselves. Not caring about appearances anymore, Anne Boonchuy choked back sobs as she finally began to accept the truth. A truth far too terrible to accept.
