Under the white light, all the shadows on Jesper’s face are stark. Sunken cheeks and sunken eyes, ashy knuckles and cracked lips. It’s a desolation of features. But there—his eyes dart, scanning Kaz’s face, his tongue flickers over his bottom lip, his chest rises and falls on one deep breath. Like dandelions between paving stones or the first rays of dawn.
