Smoke was familiar to Viktor.
He knew the way it burnt in his lungs and stole his oxygen, the ashy scent that invaded his nose, the way it clung to his skin and refused to leave, the way it made his eyes water making it difficult to see.
The council building had exploded, now he was sure he was supposed to be dead, instead he’d jolted upright coughing and gasping for air, he distantly heard Mel’s voice, he felt a surge of energy in his veins, he saw a blue glow and felt a thrum of power around him.
What happened, how was he alive?

The first thing Viktor noticed after stepping out of the Hexcore’s cocoon, he couldn't feel.
Jayce hugged him and he didn't feel the warmth he once remembered, nor the joy that came from seeing his partner, just…nothing.
Something told Viktor that Jayce was in grave danger.OR
Viktor gets possessed by the Arcane, does all he can to prevent the 'glorious evolution' with the help of Jayce and others, can they stop armageddon.

Viktor sputters incredulously, but Jayce powers on) “— I’m dragging you back to…” he blinks. “Who am I dragging you back to? Who do you have looking after you?”“I do not need a babysitter,” Viktor scoffs. “I have been through worse. I will be fine. I will pay someone to deliver some meals and take the week off work.”
Jayce looks at him like Viktor’s just said something incredibly and unbearably sad.
“So,” Viktor continues, “are you going to do the laundry, or not? If not, I will find someone else.”
Jayce is silent for a long moment. Then:
“Yeah,” he says. “I can do that.”
Viktor resigns himself to recover from spinal fusion surgery alone. He fails to account for Jayce's fervent desire to serve him.

Summary
Jayce’s fear of the cold persisted long after he nearly lost his mother in the snow storm. While he had told the story to Viktor countless times, he had never truly explained just how much it affected him to this day. The fear of losing those he loves the most bled into his affection for Viktor, and the treacherous winter in Piltover brings these emotions to a head.

Or, Jayce has childhood trauma from the snow and he’s so in love with Viktor that the thought of losing him exacerbates his PTSD. This is my first fic on AO3 and as a long time reader, I just hope I do these characters justice.

After a secretive trip to the Undercity goes terribly wrong, Viktor is left trying to piece himself together and drag himself back home. And it was nothing new. Nothing so terribly unusual.
But why does home look and sound so much like the lab...?
I.e., Instead of locating Singed, Viktor is attacked during his initial trip to the Undercity. Confused, exhausted, and in pain, he accidentally goes back to the lab instead of his own room, where his partner just so happens to be pulling an all-nighter...
