    Immediately after he and Alma had eloped, they tried for a baby. Alma was desperate for a child, although they had had slight problems with infertility. They tried and tried, and it nearly drove her mad knowing that her biggest wish was made nearly impossible because of something she could not control.

    It didn’t exactly help that every time they did make love, Ennis’ mind was elsewhere, far out and up, up, up on a mountain.
