Summary
Mack knew Lightning’s schedule prevented him from having a normal life. Friends were nearly out of the question the way his agent kept moving them around. He’d catch him watching other kids out the window sometimes, staring at the way they’d laugh and talk. Those were the moments Mack wished Johnny were here to help. Johnny would know how to be friends with the kid rather than just his driver. Johnny would easily get Lightning to smile the same way other kids do.
But Johnny isn’t here. So Mack would make a comment about the 95 and distract the racer into talking about any recent upgrades he’s made. He’d joke about how most drivers don’t bother learning half as much about cars as Lightning does and the kid would flush bright red, pride bubbling up beneath the blush.
Not a lot of people were in McQueen’s corner.
By Mack’s count, he had two - Mack and Johnny - and Johnny was just a ghost.
Or; five times Mack was the only family Lightning had and one time he didn't have to be.

“Just tell him! Rip it off like a bandaid.”
When Lightning whispered something to Cal that Doc couldn’t make out, he heaved another sigh. “I’ve told you before, rookie, I don’t talk to air. So either spit it out or I’m hanging up.”
“Wait! Uh, okay, so this is the funny part…”
He could almost picture the young Dinoco driver rolling his eyes at his friend. “Yeah, right.”
“Lightning. Where. Are you?”
“Jail.”
The night before a race, Lightning and Cal go off on a joyride that lands them on the wrong side of the law. The only thing stopping Doc from leaving them in jail overnight to learn their lesson is the knowledge of a deep gash festering on Lightning's leg and Cal's concern about an impending infection. And he'd thought this was going to be a quiet night...
