“It’s my job to protect you,” Merlin whispers.
Arthur’s brow creases. “At the cost of yourself?”
Merlin gives a crooked, painful smile. “That’s what protection is, isn’t it?”
Arthur doesn’t speak; he doesn’t know how to respond to that, how to even begin to unravel the lifetime of sacrifice tangled in those few words. Instead, he reaches out. Slowly. Gently. Fingers brushing Merlin’s forearm. Merlin flinches, not because he’s afraid, but because the touch is kind.
“Let me help,” Arthur says, voice raw. “Just this once. Let me take care of you.”
It's time for someone to hold what was once hidden.

Summary
Arthur sees more than his father thinks. He sees how cruel the persecution of magic users is. He sees how prejudices destroy the lives of innocent people. He understands that magic is nothing but a tool which can both harm and heal. And, despite the king’s orders and laws, he helps sorcerers. Doing all this alone is a heavy burden, though, but the only person he’d like to have on his side is Merlin.
But Merlin, who twitches every time Uther mentions sorcery, who runs away when Arthur tries to bring up magic, and hides from druids, hates magic almost as fiercely as the king does, and definitely doesn’t want to deal with it, right?
