    “This is dangerous?”

“You have no idea, do you?” His eyes darkened as he came towards her. “Love, you’re alone with me in my room in the very early morning. You’re marrying me tomorrow so that I don’t have to go back to prison, and you’ve just proposed that I slowly corrupt you by degrees; that I have my way with you; that I teach you all about your body, about what makes you feel good, about how to be with a man; that we do everything but that one thing that would ruin us… and now you want me to kiss you. If that’s not dangerous, kitten, I don’t know what is.”

    *** *** ***

With the passage of the Pureblood Marriages Act, Sirius Black has only weeks to marry a Muggle-born witch or face reimprisonment in Azkaban. But there are complications to this fake union that neither of them has ever dreamt of… not the least of which is how much they actually want each other. The next time she needed a Patronus, Hermione knew exactly which memory she would use: Sirius leaning against his bedroom door, his shirt still unbuttoned, grinning like the naughtiest scoundrel, and watching her with eyes like the clouds before sunrise.

His hand came back. Fingers trailing slowly up her calf. A silent touch that felt less like control and more like praise. Like he was telling her - this is good. You’re good.

A shaky breath escaped her lips. Technically, she wasn’t even doing anything, right? This wasn’t sex. There was no skin-to-skin. No real touching.

    Foot stuff didn’t count—did it?

Or... Hermione stumbles messily into something that feels a lot like love.

    Summary

Rhaenyra Stone knows how the ballet world works. Perfection is key, rather it be on the stage, careful not to miss even the smallest of steps, or shoved into a booth with an abonnès who sees nothing wrong in digging their fingers into her skin. She’s known this since she was young, Mysaria had drilled it into her head enough, and in the sixteen years she’s been alive, no one has proven her wrong, not once. Being perfect is how she’s survived, even if all she sees herself as now is nothing more than just a doll for men to toss around. And she expects no different from the French ambassador who’s shown up at her door looking for what is owed to him. All he wants is a doll to play with, and that’s what she’ll be for him. Even if the lemon cakes that she’s always wanted start showing up fresh on her doorstep, or the ballet slippers she’s worn holes into are now suddenly replaced with a new pair from an elite store. She won’t delude herself into thinking she’s anything more than just a ballerina.

    Pink Camellia (Camellia japonica)

A bloom of profound sentiment, the pink camellia conveys deep admiration, affection, and most notably, a poignant longing for one who is absent.

Traditionally presented to an individual from whom one is separated, whether by distance or circumstance, it serves as a tender expression of remembrance and unwavering care. Its message is one of cherished thoughts for the recipient, bridging the gap of physical separation.

The flower's significance is deeply rooted in its unique botanical nature. Upon wilting, the camellia’s petals and calyx do not scatter; they fall from the stem as a single, intact unit. For this reason, it is held in the highest esteem as a symbol of a perfect union and an eternal bond; a love that remains whole and unbroken, even in the face of an end.

Tucked beside the entry for the pink camellia was a small, folded note in Theo’s elegant script.

“So you know what you’re running from. T.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

The moment Malfoy’s tongue came out to briefly lick his lips as he gazed down at hers, her eyes narrowed, her mouth opening.

“You,” she murmured quietly, “repulse me.”

And with those words, she indignantly, defensively, and forcefully placed her palms flat on his chest, shoving him back as hard as she could, his back hitting the opposite wall of the lift.

His face went from shock, to ire, to resentment, and finally to amused resignation. He leaned his head against the wall and let out a bark of laughter before his eyes met hers with animosity.

“One day,” he snarled maliciously, “I’m going to marry the hell out of you, Granger.”

“Oh, rea—” Hermione began sarcastically, ready to fling back an insult, before processing his words, their tone, and being caught off-guard. “Wait. What?”

Draco nodded affirmatively, straightening his clothes, letting his wand fall from his sleeve into his palm, casting a purgo on his stained trench coat before hitting her clothes with the same spell.

“Can’t let my future wife walk around looking like... well, like that,” Malfoy spat with revulsion. “We Malfoys have an image to uphold, after all. That’ll include you.”

One night. He would hoard her to himself for one night.

One night with the woman I’m in love with, to make and savor the memory like the greedy bastard I am for the rest of my life. Then I’ll let her go. I’ll let her move on. I’ll let her find her forever.

As her eyes went back to Draco, watching her from across the room, almost as if he were waiting for her to change her mind, she steeled her resolve to not drop her gaze.

I’m so in love with you.

She needed this. Needed to have one night with someone she loved even if he didn’t love her back. He would hold her like he did, she knew that. He would give the illusion that he loved her, still enraptured by the glamour of the moon and the sky and the romance of a summer night.

I’ll hold onto the memory of this night for the rest of my life. Then I’ll let him go. I’ll let him move on. I’ll let him find his forever.

She watched him light the enormous fireplace. Watched him cast the cooling charm so the fire wouldn’t heat the room. Watched him step closer to her. Watched him as his hands tentatively reached towards her, watched as her own hands met his, their fingers intertwining.

It was different. There was no smoldering hatred, no combustible dislike. There was no ire in his eyes. There was no fury, no jealousy, no ulterior motive. It was simple. It was easy.

Her fingers meandered slowly down the line of buttons on his shirt. He shouldered it to the floor, watching as her eyes admired the dance of the firelight across his fair skin, his sectumsempra scars crisscrossing the porcelain landscape notably whiter, slashing from his collarbone down to the V of his hips. Having never paid the scars much attention, Hermione reached out her hands, letting her fingers trace the lines delicately. I see you, her touch seemed to say, I see you.

He watched her, drinking in her face, letting her touch what she wanted, letting her see what she wanted. He slowly stepped around her, gently gathered her long dark hair in his hands, moving it over her left shoulder, his fingers finding the zipper of her black dress, slowly inching it down her back. Once it stopped at her tailbone, she felt his hands smooth the material open, carefully unveiling her shoulders. She heard his breath hitch, making her heart leap, as his long fingers caressed the smooth, bare skin of her back before his lips left a line of small, slow kisses across each shoulder. She let the dress pool at her feet, closing her eyes, relishing the feel of his mouth on her skin, leaning her head back against his shoulder, letting his arms come around her, letting his fingers flatten against the soft plane of her stomach, letting them lightly skim the waistband of her black lace knickers.

If she didn’t know any better, she’d say he was memorizing her. Memorizing the feel of every inch of her, memorizing every dip, every curve, as if he were afraid he’d forget; as if he were making a memory he wanted to remember after tonight. His lips found the side of her neck, his hands traveling back to her shoulders then dragging slowly down her arms, circling her slim wrists, before he carefully turned her to face him.

“In case I never told you,” he breathed against her mouth, “you are so beautiful.” He took a deep breath and continued softly, “you are easily the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.”

She blushed furiously. “Surely with all the women –”

He silenced her with his finger pressed to her lips. Silenced her with the panting breaths against her cheek. Silenced her with the look of desire etched on every line of his face. “There is no one who holds a candle to you, Granger. In any capacity.”

"What in Merlin’s name is that?” Granger asked, furrowing her brow as she examined the gold dust on her hand.

But Draco knew. He’d been around magical plants his entire life. His mother adored gardening. He’d done exceptionally well in Herbology, easily earning an O. He’d assumed Granger would know, but she still looked confused—possibly in denial.

She’d touched it. It was on her hand. The cloud of glitter was still swirling around them, and Draco knew— they were fucked.

"What the hell happened?" she asked him quietly, her voice trembling, betraying the anger she still tried to hold on to. "What changed?"
"Our relationship had an expiration date," he said, his tone matter-of-fact, like he had already come to terms with it, like he had already given up.

“I need to know something,” he said, his back still turned to her.

Hermione straightened slightly. “What is it?”

“I want to ask you something. I promise, this is the first and last time I will.”

    He turned towards her.

“I love you,” he said simply.

As if it were the most natural thing in the world.

As if he spoke those words to her every day.

“I’ve never stopped. I loved you then, I love you now, and I will love you for the rest of my life.”

“I need to know what you want from me—if you want anything from me,” Draco went on. “I could spend my entire life trying to win you back. I could give up everything, just for one day as your partner. I would do anything, Hermione—anything—if I knew it was what you wanted.”

“If there’s even the faintest sliver of hope, I will fight for you with everything I have. I’ll stand against Grant, against Karstair, against every single one of the men who look at you the way I do. I will clear them from your path, because I can’t even bear the thought of anyone else standing where I long to be."

“But I won’t chase you if it’s not what you want. I won’t force myself into your life. I won’t come between you and someone else. I won’t be the reason you're unhappy… not again.”

“If tonight, you tell me to stop—if you tell me that my love is unwelcome—I’ll never speak of it again. I swear it. If you ask me not to try, I’ll pretend those three kisses never happened. I’ll be Maia’s father, nothing more. I promise you… one word from you, and I will never speak of this again.”

He stood before her, firelight casting golden shadows across his face.

“But if there’s even a flicker… even a single heartbeat of belief left in you—for us— please, Hermione. Tell me now. Because these past few months have been agony. Hope has been burning through me like wildfire. And fear—fear has wrapped around my throat every time I see you and wonder if I’ve already lost you forever.”

Hermione held his gaze. His eyes were soft, brimming with hope, as if he’d laid his heart in her hands and was simply waiting to see what she would do with it.

And then, unexpectedly, her mother’s voice rose in her mind: You start by listening... not just to him, but to yourself.

    She closed her eyes.

Her mother had been right—trust wasn’t a switch you flipped. It was a path, uneven and slow, paved with time and truth. And maybe she didn’t need to see the end of that path just yet. Maybe, today, it was enough to stop running from what she felt.

Because she did feel something—not just ache and longing, but the stirrings of something brave and alive. She wasn’t the girl he’d left behind, and he wasn’t the boy who had walked away. And through everything, despite everything, they had found their way back to this moment. Perhaps that meant something. Perhaps it meant everything.

She didn’t have all the answers. But she was finally ready to stop hiding from the questions.

    She opened her eyes.

And then, Hermione stepped toward him.

“You have the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Beautiful eyes, but also a little sad.

“No. Yours are the most beautiful that exist.”

Their faces were inches apart now, foreheads nearly touching. She could feel his breath against her skin, saw the way his eyes flicked down to her lips and back again.

“I want to kiss you,” he whispered, half agony, half hope.

    “Do it.”

The moment barely settled between them before his lips found hers.

It was nothing like the kiss he had given her weeks ago. This time, he kissed her softly at first, as though she might break. As though he was memorizing her—reverent and trembling.

But soon, the kiss deepened—slow and searching, then desperate, intense, burning with everything they hadn’t said. His hands came to her face, holding her like he was afraid she might vanish if he let go.

Hermione kissed him back with every ache she’d buried for years. Her fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt, clinging to him like he was gravity and she’d been floating for far too long. She felt the years between them collapse—the silence, the heartbreak, the pain of what could have been—melting away beneath the heat of his mouth.

And in that kiss, she felt it all.

He scrawled it right where the Dark Mark had once lived:

    Warning Label

When he turned back, she was watching him.

"Here," he said hoarsely, holding up his arm. "Just in case you forget."

Hermione's lips twitched—faintly, almost like a smile. She stepped forward and without saying a word, she took the marker from his hand.

    She grabbed his wrist.

Then, beneath his shaky handwriting, she added something.

    Each stroke felt like forever.

    Draco's skin prickled.

"Are you okay?" she whispered, as she continued writing.

The worry in her voice cracked something deeper than he'd expected.

"Sweet of you..." his voice cracked again, "to ask."

"You're skin is in goosebumps," she commented, running her fingers over his arm.

Draco blinked away frustration-hot tears. By the time he'd composed himself, he noticed she was writing something on her own arm. He glanced down.

    She'd written on her arm,

    Trust issues. Working on it.

"In case I forget..." she muttered, staring at her own arm.

His throat closed. His eyes burned again.

Then he looked back at his own arm.

Underneath Warning Label, she had added:

PROCEED WITH CAUTION. WORTH THE RISK.

    Capital letters. Of course.

He let out a soft laugh. A real one. It tasted like air for the first time in months. Like freedom.

He closed his eyes for just a moment.

"What?" she asked, crossing her arms, half-defensive. Her eyes flickered between him and the blank wall behind.

"You sure?" he asked. "I'm worth the risk?"

He hadn't meant to beg. But it sounded like a plea anyway.

    "Yes," she said slowly.

He resented her, whomever she was. The placement of her hand, directly over the uncomfortable throb of his heartbeat, made him angrier still. Hard to pretend at disaffection when she could feel for herself how very off kilter he was.

“Which word do I need to say? Abracadabra?”

She laughed, and – despite the fact that he wasn’t trying to be funny, despite the seething pit of anger and shame in his belly, despite the unfortunate reality that he still couldn’t breathe quite right: Draco was hard.

Hermione's heart stops and her mouth parts in shock at the caress of her cheeks with his thumbs. His smile, the heat, and the…the…overwhelming desire as he locks eyes with her and holds her captive as if he can see straight into to her soul.

“Really?” She squeaks out, making Draco's smile turn into a toothy grin with a glorious chuckle.

Instead of answering he leans forward and captures her lips with his and…

    Her heart sings.

“I grew up with anything I could ever need or want, but I…I’ve never wanted anything more than I wanted you.”

Her heart stops as her mouth parts, staring into his eyes that mirror her own wants, and she finds nothing but truth in them.

“Your friendship means the world to me and I’ll have you in my life as whatever you allow me to be but I’m a selfish man and I’ll always want more.”

    Draco takes a deep breath.

“Because I love you. I love you, and I have loved you for a long time. And I just-” He drifts off as he looks to her, terrified from his confession. That she doesn’t feel the same somehow.

“Draco.” Hermione’s voice cracks with emotion, tears welling in her eyes as she leans in to press a soft chaste kiss against his lips, her hand going to his cheek. She pulls back just enough to put her forehead against his eyes half closed as she whispers against his lips.

    “I love you too.”

His eyes open and widen, looking at her completely stunned.

    “You do?”

He’d sworn, Hermione wet-eyed and delirious with pleasure underneath him, that this was the night he’d finally be inside of her.

Silly of her, to think it’d be that easy.

    Summary

Sorted into Slytherin with the whisper of prophecy around her, Hermione refuses to bow down to the blood prejudices that poison the wizarding world. Carving her own path forward, Hermione chooses to make her own destiny, not as a Muggleborn, a halfblood, or as a pureblood... but as a New Blood, and everything the mysterious term means.

    ---

New Blood is a canon AU rewrite with Hermione sorted into Slytherin. Featuring: covens, ritual magic, world building, goblin culture, excessive amounts of science and logic and math attempting to be applied to magical concepts to make them make sense, teenage girls growing up and all that entails, a badass Hermione Granger, and far too many words and plotlines

    Bookmarker's Notes

“They’d both held back on all of those at one point or another, and ultimately it had been to their detriment. It was so new, so tender, the love they’d made together, and it had needs beyond what either of them had anticipated. Like a budding rose, it required the clarity of sunlight, the absolution of water. Love didn’t bloom on its own, and it couldn’t endure on its own, either. It needed gentle hands. It needed open hearts.

    It needed more.”

Hermione cupped his jaw with both hands, pressing her sincerity into his skin. “I fell in love with you, Draco, and I keep falling in love with you. As you are. Not the idea of you, or because of what you can give. You might say it was despite all you can give me.”

Draco made a muffled, grateful noise, and she felt a tear roll down her face, but she didn’t move to wipe it away. They had needed to have this fight. Now that they had, they could both let go, with each other. Take care of each other. Go all in.

She sniffled before continuing. “You held up a mirror to my life and I didn’t recognise it. I didn’t recognise myself. And you helped me find my way again. Everyone else in my life gave me empty words; worse than that, some of them fed me falsehoods to keep me in line. But not you. You stepped in; took action. You gave me everything I didn’t know I needed. You went a little too far, but… I forgive you,” she whispered, standing on her tiptoes so she could nuzzle into the crook of his neck. “Will you forgive me? For running away?”

All the tension in his body melted under her touch. “There’s nothing to forgive, love.”

Privately, she disagreed, but that was one point not worth belabouring. “Will you say it anyway? For me?”

“For you, anything.” He spoke it like an oath. “I forgive you. I love you. And now, do you know what I want out of life? What I’ll give away my fortune for?”

“Draco,” she cried, arms thrown around his neck, fresh tears falling on his shoulder.

“It’s you, Hermione. If I had to live these first twenty-seven years of my life a thousand times to be with you only once, I would still choose to suffer it all, if I could have you.”

“You have me,” Hermione promised, clutching him tighter. “You have me.”
