The cat’s teeth had fallen out nearly five years back, and that had been time enough, but Enoch had dug in his heels, and his Pottsfielders, ever falling over themselves to indulge him, had eagerly cooed at the gummy-mouthed thing, mincing the turkey cuts into paste and bottle feeding the damn thing like a babe.
He was cute, Miss Daisy had defended, cradling the bundle of black fur in her arms. Enoch had given the Beast a toothless grin from the crook of her elbow.
Then its fur had begun falling out in clumps, and he wasn’t cute anymore.

Uncle Enoch, who is either in a better mood than his husband, or is as eager to be done with the library budget as Lorna is to be done with her homework, begins pushing his paper aside and removes his reading glasses.

Two days after the brothers leave, Lorna feels better than she has ever felt in her life.
It's easier to stand up than it has been in years, free of the gnawing cinch of hunger like a corset. Lorna is warm as if her blood has remembered how to flow. She no longer shivers like a leaf in the wind at every odd hour, and when she goes to bed, she only needs half as many blankets. When morning comes, it is easy to rise with the sun, and her fingers do not seem clumsy and slow when she picks up the delicate hobbies she had mostly abandoned as her affliction had worsened.
Sometime after midnight on the third morning, when the sun is long from dawning, she wakes with an unquenchable hunger roaring in her ears.
