The officer stares at him without blinking and Carwood doesn't think anyone has ever looked at him so intensely before. He thinks maybe he should be intimidated but… he’s not. Definitely not. Instead, he’s painfully aware, in a way he hasn’t been since he was first going through puberty, that he’s an omega.
(Years from now, Carwood will look back at this moment with clear eyes and know. Know that there was really only ever one outcome. That the point of no return had somehow already passed.)

“Well,” she said, and Lew could practically hear her roll her eyes, the gesture so familiar and similar to the way his own son mutely reminded him every day that he considered Lew an idiot that Lew almost gritted his teeth. “Roy’s his boy too, isn’t he?”

Summary
In a universe where humans colonized the solar system along Cold War lines, it's possible to create AI "replacements" of the fallen. In theory, replacements are perfect copies: same body, same consciousness, and Dick Winters has his reasons for wanting no part of them. But when the war turns hot and Dick dies on a combat mission, Nix impulsively arranges for his replacement. When Dick returns to the troopship Toccoa, everything has changed, except—theoretically—him. Now he must accept an unwanted new identity, while Nix comes to terms with his reasons for refusing to let Dick stay dead.

They don't know what to do, sure as hell don't have a procedure for dealing with corpses that rise up a half hour after being proclaimed dead and attack the nearest nurse. No textbook has handy step-by-step instructions for a case like this.
