Summary
There was another weight that sunk the mattress, creaking the bedframe beneath. Warmth cupped Oscar’s face — he heard his own breath hitch. What he braced for was the silk impersonality of gloves, but it didn’t matter now that those hands were wrapping around his head, untying the knot of void’s fabric and pulling down the sole barrier Oscar had. When the world returned to Oscar, it was Alex’s face he blinked into clarity, mirthless and coloured by a dying flame. Then, he met his gaze and it was as if Oscar never had a glimpse into what laid past his veneer.
Alex smiled. “Good evening, Edenic.”
Who else should he expect?
--
Sodom had deformed Oscar, and there was something ridiculous in him fooling himself that where he fell was the lowest level he could land from where Alex had pushed him. Then there was Alex and an unknown, urging him to do worse. Because this was what he wanted, no?

Summary
Then again, this religious veil wrapped around Norfolk never seemed to fully conceal him. While some may speak of their true beliefs privately, he wasn’t the type to do so — let alone admit that the gazes upon his wall held more weight than the ones above because then, they were tangible, found in the very architecture in the estate he called home. When people spoke of fearing the divine, he would often furrow his brow, yet nod along to appease them, for he couldn’t fathom how someone so far removed from you could incite such emotion. In truth, though, he was aware of the sense — even understood these believers more than he thought. Because simply by remaining on the wall, they, in turn, knew him.

For men like Oscar Edenic, one must prioritise routine — regardless of the truth.

Summary
A part of Alex feared he might be making it worse for him — promising him to bring him the impossible, but when did he ever start to see Oscar as this fragile thing — of something too delicate to be hurt and be undeserving to be shattered? Had it started when Oscar became ill and his fragility had reason or did it begin that night, where kerosene illuminated him or did it do so long ago, in a quiet moment of some such where Alex awoke and realised he had been running on empty?
--
Alex wonders about Oscar, then himself, then the truth on how they ended up here. And to think that the thought of another reality lured them to Spain.

Summary
In spite of the twilight, sparse in between darkness and all mystery reeling back into itself, Crisóstomo’s world dimmed itself at the edges. Then, the night bled into the river. For a moment, Crisóstomo closed his eyes and listened to Elias’ breathing, letting the waters’ soft ripples beneath them muddle itself into another, insignificant noise until it was as if it wasn’t there at all. Crisóstomo let his hands trail around Elias’ torso, feeling around for that evident sense — a slight cinch of the waist, a somewhat coarse fabric and a body that seemed to bear all the weight of the world and remain infallible until he laid his hands on him.
--
After Elias breaks him out of prison, desperation and Crisóstomo's version of penance merge.

Summary
“The man I swore my life to was Crisóstomo Ibarra, sir.”
Simoun regarded Elias; his shoulders had stopped shaking the more they debated amongst themselves and the tone he used with his words were steady — a resolute one that even Simoun, with his disbelief at the current state of his friend, could acknowledge that Elias was sure of himself when he said this.
There was a pause before Simoun said, “And I am not him?”
--
Lightning strikes again and Elias' misfortunes continue.
