    Miguel shows no sign of hearing him, curled snugly into the corner between the desk and the wall. Smoothly, Hobie drops into a crouch and shifts forward. Miguel’s lip curls up and away from his teeth, which—

    “Jesus,” Miles breathes.

    Hobie stops and swears.

    Miguel’s mouth is a mess of blood. One of his fangs is broken off at the root, while the other has fractured halfway down. As he peels his lip back in a half-hearted snarl, a thin bead of blood rolls down his chin.

    Miguel arrives at headquarters injured, feral, and bleeding from broken fangs. His emergency protocol activates. His first three contacts can’t answer—so LYLA calls Hobie Brown, and Hobie brings back-up.
