Summary
It had evolved into this, a tension clinging to them like damp wool, making the air between them heavy and sour, the silence pressing so hard against Mu Qing’s skin it felt like it would split him open. He should have been used to it, the biting cold of being at odds with Feng Xin, the bitter taste of saying too much, too wrong, but he wasn’t. Every time, it left him raw, unsettled, off-balance in a way that made him want to lash out, to run, to do anything but stand there and let the silence swallow him.
Feng Xin never meant for it to end like this—mud, rain, blood, and the quiet terror of almost too late. Now Mu Qing won’t wake, and Feng Xin won’t leave his side. Apologies catch in the back of his throat, pining digs into old wounds, and hope—fragile, stubborn—glows in the dark like dawn through storm clouds. Maybe this time, they’ll both learn how to stay without tearing each other apart.

“It’s not that far,” Wei Ying said, looking up at the sky with a sense of betrayal. It had started to snow while they were having dinner, big flakes that melted the instant they touched his skin. It was several degrees colder than it had been when he arrived, but it wasn’t cold enough for him to be too uncomfortable in his light jacket. Thus was the risk of living somewhere with a high chance of snow, and thus was the wardrobe malfunction he had about three times a month in the winter. “We can still walk.”
Lan Zhan nodded at him, putting his phone away. He dug his gloves out of the pocket of his coat - a beautiful wool number that looked right off the runway - and handed them to Wei Ying.

Wei Wuxian hadn’t been avoiding Lan Wangji for years, but he hadn’t been not-avoiding Lan Wangji either. There was something awful and awkward about seeing your intended spouse after turning them down that Wei Wuxian just didn’t want to deal with. It helped that he went away for university, and that Lan Wangji went away for university, and they happened to both go to different countries. Wei Wuxian liked to think they both wanted to get as far away from the situation as possible.
(the situation being each other)
So why, then, does Wei Wuxian’s heart skip a beat every time he sees Lan Wangji? And why is adult Lan Wangji so hot? It’s not fair that they could be married and instead Wei Wuxian is awkwardly pining for his former betrothed, a boy he once publicly broke it off with without regret.
