Max would always be a puppy in Daniel's eyes. He still had that milky sweet scent stuck to his soft skin, that giggle that made everyone want to smile.

Remember 2023 when Max won all but 3 races? Maybe he had a little incentive for all those wins... (Beyond another world championship, of course). Maybe that incentive was called Daniel Ricciardo...

Max went still, only for a second.It was like the world paused with him. Then he laughed, short, incredulous. “Seriously?”

“Are you a little?”
Max's expression doesn't change when Daniel blurts the words at him.
He answers, “Yeah.”
Then he shrugs.
Like Daniel’s entire world doesn’t tilt on its axis with the movement. Like this information was obvious, or innocuous, and shouldn’t completely blow Daniel’s mind the way it does.
“What the fuck? Since when.”
“Since I was sixteen, obviously, Daniel.”
“I would’ve noticed,” he weakly argues. “There is no way I wouldn’t have noticed.”
Save for last week, never had Daniel’s caregiver instinct ever been set off by or around Max. There is just no way Max could’ve regressed around him. He would’ve noticed.
Daniel can’t be a failure at this, too.
“No one notices,” Max replies, “which is good. I am quiet when I regress.”
“What do you mean, quiet?”
“As in, I do not speak, Daniel.”

“Hi, Daniel,” the man at his door says, tentative with a sideways smile. There’s sweat on his hairline and two cage-like boxes in his hands. He hears a meowing come out of them when he shifts to set them down.
“Max,” Daniel breathes out, floored and caught in the way Max rubs at his own arm awkwardly. Max just smiles.
