The hum of the lightsaber rang in the air. Palpatine’s eyes stared at Anakin, accusing, aghast, proud, angered. His hand, weak and feeble, struggled to grab at the hilt of the saber. Cold skin brushed Anakin’s knuckles, washing him with a sudden and abrasive horror that caused him to flick off his saber and stumbled back a step, two, until his feet caught and he fell onto his side.
The hilt of his saber rolled towards him, as accusing as the Chancellor’s open eyes.
“What—” Anakin’s strained voice shredded out of his own throat as he watched the man he had cared so much about fall forward, onto his knees, onto his chest, dead. There was no blood, yet Anakin found himself wiping his hand onto his robes, as though he could clean his hands of the sin he had committed. Palpatine had been unarmed. He had been a Sith. He had been unarmed. He was—threatening the Republic. He had promised Anakin truths beyond the capabilities of the Jedi. He was killed by Anakin’s shaking hands. “What have I done?” He asked the air, the body of his once friend now dead.
