Life was peaceful, for a while. In Hans’ embrace, the broken and charred pieces of Henry’s soul were held tight. He would remain by his lord, by his love’s side, as long as he could. As long as he was wanted. As long as he was useful. For Henry, it was enough. It had to be enough.

Summary
Hans puts his arms around Henry and they sway, not quite dancing, grasping onto the tattered fragments of song and holding them tight. And it should be joyful but Henry feels the ache in his chest growing and glowing and expanding, cleaving him into mirrored fragments, because the music is so thin and distant and the forest reflections are so wild and strange and they will never do this properly, they will never dance before a minstrel, they will never be more than these phantoms in the dark.

"Now, I saw your horse outside. So why are you scaring the stable boys? You sent Matej running out of here for fear of his life. Did you yell at someone again?” Henry asked. “Was it so boring here without me you had to give him shit about leaving knots in Aethon’s mane?”
Hans looked up at him sharply. “Yes. That was what I was doing.”
“Oh, no.” Now Henry knew he was lying. “My lord, what did you do?”

Summary
The sun was Hans' first lover, before any girl and long before Henry. Henry doesn't mind being second to that, because the sun left its kisses behind, in the freckles that dot Hans all over his back, clustered on the tops of his shoulders and arms, whispers of faded sunburns and brief boyhood escapes. Henry can't know every story, but he wants to ask, to try and hold all of them; he can't kiss every freckle, but he can try that, too.
