Standing where he had made his first real kill, a sharp thread of pain pulls tight around his hearts.
As if no time at all has passed, there's the flattened circle of razorgrass spreading outward around the fallen bones of the beast.
And, just as he'd remembered, a dark hollow still yawns open beneath a massive dead tree, at the very edge of the deadly, glimmering field.
The only weapons he carries are those he has made here. A whip, coiled at his hip and studded with carefully-selected blades of razorgrass. A blade he'd fashioned from cast-off teeth of a kalisk – his kalisk.
When he steps into the darkness, the earth is cool; sloping steeply downward beneath his feet.
He does not know where he is going.
But Dek of the Yautja feels it.
Home.

Summary
Even the good vaults weren't earthquake proof, no matter how well they were built. California herself decided the fate of Cooper's family years before he ever found what was left. With not much else, Cooper picks up a lead from Lucy on a possible new serum. What he ends up finding is a whole other can of worms. Another Vault-Tec experiment and another lease on this crazy thing called life.

Ivy doesn’t look like much. She’s quiet, competent, forgettable by design. But she’s carrying the aftermath of an Enclave experiment that never should’ve existed. Taken just as radiation began to change her, Ivy was infected with a prototype virus meant to halt ghoulification. Across the wasteland, the virus failed—mutating, killing, or doing nothing at all.
