A caged tiger monkey.
This was a jail, no matter how much her jailers, brother, Aang, or anyone else tried to deny it. And if they treated her like an animal, she might as well act like one. This morning she didn't have the fire in her belly for that. Not yet. But maybe after a meal.
She dragged the tray across the floor and sat cross-legged in front of it, eating in stoic silence. She wished she had a chair. A princess would have a chair. A person would. But she had burnt hers. Her eyes flickered to the scorch marks along the walls, the blackened metal door frame and hinges.
They were scared of her.
Good. Let them be afraid.
All Azula would need to escape is a helpful hand from an unlikely source. Someone, perhaps, who saw her true potential.

Summary
Nine years after the war ended, seven years after she escaped the asylum, five years after the search was called off, Azula is forced to go back to the Fire Nation.
She has no intention of reconnecting with the people who hurt and abandoned her, no intention of bowing to the hypocrisy of her brother and his friends, no intention of staying any longer than she has to in this nation she sacrificed everything for, only to be discarded. She wants nothing more than to go back to her simple life as a farmer.
There is, however, one reason why she will go back and play her part. A young girl who has no one else in the world, a young girl who understand what it is to be rejected by your only family. The only one who has looked at Azula and seen something worth loving.
She will do whatever she has to to ensure that the girl doesn't grow up like she did.
