Calm down. Calm down. Breathe.
Dream doesn’t know where he is. He doesn’t care. All he cares about is trying his best to breathe normally as he huddles into himself.The problem that seems to be demanding his utmost attention at the moment is his annoying mystery affliction. This is the third time it has distracted him now. When the Corinthian mentioned Burgess– he couldn’t wrangle the spike of anxiety in his gut, and it made him lose control of the situation.
This can’t keep happening to him.
Why can’t he just focus? This thing, whatever was happening to him, it’s just some little nightmare that seems to be plaguing him.
Focus. He tells himself for the umpteenth time. Suck it up. Focus on the ruby. Once you get all your tools back and fix the damage you’ve done to humanity, then you can focus on whatever this is.
He tries to breathe. It doesn't work very well.

Dream goes on his quest for his tools, all while trying to handle his trauma.

Summary
After several years of Dream remaining obstinately silent, even after beatings and the death of Jessamy, Roderick Burgess decided to try and something else. The guards he had hired were cruel enough for it, after all.
Or, Burgess has the guards sexually assault Dream while he's imprisoned. When Dream finally escapes, he's repressed the memories, leaving a large part of his imprisonment a blank. But repressed memories do not stay repressed forever. This is what happens after he escapes, and the first part in a series of him processing the matter, with help from the people around him.
I plan to have at least a part three of this series, maybe more. Title from "Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall" by Simon & Garfunkel.
