“‘Do you want a list of all the things wrong with me?’ Jay asks, not angry but definitely a little too riled up and heated. ‘I can give you a list.’ The earlier downcast slump to his shoulders is gone, but the determination he grinds into the set of his jaw is almost worse. It’s one thing for Jay to feel a little sorry for himself after a rough day of training where everyone seemed to be hitting breakthroughs when he was stuck at a wall; that’s normal for him. They’re used to it. It’s another for him to get all fired up and matter-of-fact about putting himself down.
It makes Kai’s chest prickle with sparks wanting to kindle.”
