One second Ilya Rozanov is flying down the ice with the wind in his hair and the puck in his control, almost certainly on his way to score the tying goal, and the next, he’s crumpling to the ground. He falls, slides limply until his body cracks against the boards, and lies terribly, unnaturally still.
Getting your bell rung by another player is one thing; it happens. Falling limp and heavy to the ice when no one’s even touched you is another thing entirely.

Ilya drops to his knees and finds a sleeping baby in a tiny pink bunny patterned onesie. It feels illegal for something to be this small. Who would do something like this? Surely a mother somewhere would be sick with worry. Then he sees a folded square of paper tucked into the side of the car seat. He unfolds it to a note – Ilya, I can’t keep her. She’s yours.
Ilya undoes the car seat buckle as fast as his shaking hands will allow. Slowly, carefully, he lifts her from her car seat and settles her in his arms. The baby stirs, and when she opens her eyes, they’re the clearest blue he’s ever seen – a mirror image of his own.
He is so fucked.
Or, Ilya very suddenly stumbles into parenthood, Shane isn't a step dad he's the dad who stepped up, and Hayden Pike might not be so bad after all.

Cliff Marleau can be a dumbass, it’s fair to say - anyone can, some people would claim it more likely for men, and some people would certainly claim that being in a profession that involves violence, speed, and sharp things, and a ridiculous among of travel all on a regular basis would make it pretty likely for someone to be a dumbass. He does dumb shit sometimes, but it’s usually pretty basic.
Actually, how this started was years ago, when he still felt just barely out of being a rookie himself and Coach asked him to keep a watch on their new Russian rookie Ilya Rozanov, now Boston’s captain and one of Cliff’s good friends.
And Cliff is pretty damn curious about the girlfriend Ilya swears he doesn’t want to have.
