She doesn’t think she’s doing better, but she also doesn’t think she’s been feeling any worse than she used to. She used to feel bad, all the time, but now she doesn’t think she feels bad. She doesn’t think she feels anything, most of the time. Like there’s an empty shelf in her chest that’s gathering dust.

Summary
It was some sort of scarf, probably stolen from his mother. Lucas had been acting giddy all night, that nervous energy that always seemed to fill them when they were going to be alone. Erica was out at a sleepover, Charles and Sue were on a romantic anniversary getaway, and Max and Lucas had only a few more weekends at home before college. Birth control had become her best friend ever since graduation. He was rubbing off on her and now she was buzzing with anticipation.
She squeezed Lucas’s hand as he led her into the bedroom. He wasn’t saying anything, which sent a shiver of anxiety down her spine. It was the good kind of anxiety though, like the climb to the top of a rollercoaster. He squeezed back in reassurance and she smiled softly. Such a gentleman.
Or, Lucas has a sexy surprise for Max.
