    It’s like this— maybe Megumi has made mistakes in the past, errors in judgement, moved purely on impulse in a way that had a domino effect on Yuuji’s life, dragged him into a world of curses and violence. Maybe if he had the choice to go back, Megumi would be faster, smarter, make better choices and avoid every hospital in Sendai. But he can’t. What’s done is done. What he can do is be there for Yuuji now, when he needs him, so that he’d never have to look over his shoulder and find himself alone.
    Just like he said he would.

    “Okay,” Megumi says, relaxing his hands. He places them on the tabletop in front of him like he’s got nothing to hide, and stares straight ahead at the stove. “If you need help cleaning up your undercut, I can help you trim it. If you want.”

    Yuuji goes maddeningly silent for a moment, long enough for Megumi to regret even offering, until he blurts out a delighted “Really?”

    Two months after Shinjuku, Megumi helps Yuuji cut his hair.
