‘You got ash on the table.’
Hayakawa blinks. His cigarette is burning in the ends of his fingers, and Denji is already padding past him to stand out on the balcony as he runs a towel over his wet hair. He crushes the butt into the ashtray, snaps the broadsheet shut and raises his arm so he can stare down at the ash smeared on the edge of the table and over his lap. The breeze from outside makes him realise just how warm he is―not warm, no; hot, sweating―as he listlessly turns his head to stare at Denji’s back.
On that nondescript Sunday morning, Hayakawa knows that something is horrendously amiss.

Hayakawa decides very quickly that he does not like Denji. Does not like him lounging around his apartment, overbearing and constant. Ravenous, loutish, and eternally self-serving. Daydreaming about how he might deal with him helps―for a time―but then all too quickly gets out of hand.
