“I’m thirty years old. And now that dad…” he trails off. He doesn’t want to talk about their father. “I need to marry. I need an heir.”
“You’re not a medieval lord,” Baoxiang says. “I need an heir. Honestly. Can’t you just go clubbing or download a dating app like everyone else?”
“This will be faster,” Esen says, because it will be. “I’ll be engaged in less than six months. And it’ll be good publicity for the company.”
“Sure,” Baoxiang says, “the board and the shareholders will love the CEO being a show pony on World’s Most Homoerotic Heterosexual Dating Show.”

“You have snow in your hair.”
“Thank you, darling,” Esen said. He had paused in the doorway of their chambers, probably hesitating at the sight of the dry, pristine stretch of floor ahead of him. Then he shrugged and started stripping off out there on the patio. “I hadn’t noticed.”

Summary
“Whatever,” The Third Prince said. “You’re just some provincial space station trash. How’s the sunlight feel? Is it how you’ve always imagined it?”
“No,” Baoxiang said. He tipped his head up, towards the sky. The first planet of the Khaganate had an atmosphere like the one of the old earth. A single star hovered in the sky, close enough to nurture, too far away to burn. A sun. Baoxiang had never seen one before. He looked straight at it, in a way no human ever could have done. “It’s nothing like the poems. But you knew that already, didn’t you?”
“Do you think I read poetry?” The Third Prince asked with a scoff. He was looking at the sun, too, but he was squinting, as though the light pained him. He was doing it wrong; his eyes were too open, and the rest of his face was too relaxed.
“You might as well stop pretending to be human,” Baoxiang said. “It won’t fool them, and it won’t make them love you.”
A sun, a moon, ten years, two conversations.

Summary
The rules of Man’s Best Friend are simple: sixteen young, conventionally attractive women compete for the chance to marry a rich, conventionally attractive man. He decides who wins. His best friend decides who makes it to the finals.
The rules of the seasonal bet between the handlers on Man’s Best Friend are also simple: they all pick a contestant, and the one whose pick is eliminated first buys all the drinks until filming for the season wraps up.
“That doesn’t count!” Ma says, incensed. “He’s not even in the running. I should get to pick someone else.”
“Sorry, Teacher Ma,” Zhu says, not sounding very sorry at all, “the law is the law.”

“Your boyfriend’s on the holos again.” Baoxiang’s voice through the speakers was melodious, carefully modulated. A bit deeper than it had been the previous day, because he always liked to play around with it, the same way he played around with his avatar.
Esen pressed the button on his wristband to turn the nearest screen on, and then, only belatedly, as he navigated to a news channel, said, “He’s not my boyfriend.”
Against his shoulder, the metal wall of The Iridescent Scholar warmed and began, gently, to vibrate. Baoxiang’s way of laughing, followed only a beat or two later by an audible laugh through the speakers. “Your celebrity crush, then.”
One day, in a thousand years, the pattern of the world brings General Ouyang and Esen-Temur together again.

“And then there’s the ghost,” the real estate agent said.
Right. Esen had been wondering when she’d get to that. He’d seen ghosts before, of course. A Qing dynasty scholar who’d died by suicide had haunted his undergrad dormitory. It’d been a category two haunting - a looper, repeating the scene of its death over and over, stepping on a long-gone stool and hanging itself from a length of silk that disappeared, swaying, into the rafters. This one didn’t do anything of the sort: it just stood there, immobile, in the middle of the living room. It would have looked kind of cool, actually, with gleaming armor and long, swaying hair that could have been right out of a historical drama, if it hadn’t been for its face.
In that it didn’t have one.

Summary
“Would you like to hold him?” the Empress asks. The words stretch between them. They make Baoxiang wonder if this meeting was as accidental as it initially looked like. They make him wonder if the Emperor knows, if this is a trap or a test.
It doesn’t matter. Baoxiang has been dead for more than a year, and if wanting to hold the son he’s made is what kills him it will have been worth it. It might kill him regardless of what the Emperor does. “Please,” he says, and his voice sounds rough and strangled to his own ears. He sounds, he realizes with an edge of hysteria, like Ouyang had. Wanting and not wanting, tearing himself apart over it.
The baby is heavier than he expected, surprisingly muscular, twisting and turning in his arms like a cat. It takes a moment for Baoxiang to see his scowling little face, and once he does his heart throbs. He’d been prepared to see himself, or to see the Empress, but the Imperial Prince Zhu Di, at six months old, soft and round-cheeked and scowling, looks like he could be the son Esen never had.
After a new dynasty is established, Wang Baoxiang learns how to live again.

Summary
“So,” Zhu said, once they’d traveled in silence for what she judged to be close to an hour, “could this humble monk entertain you in any way, Miss? Any stories of happy brides you’d like to hear?”
“Would any of them be true?” Ma asked. There was something almost distracted in her tone, as though she was addressing herself more than she was addressing Zhu. “I don’t need cheering.”
“Maybe not,” Zhu allowed. “But it’s boring to sit in silence. And this monk tells excellent stories.”As a monk of Singing Hills, Zhu has spent years traveling the country and collecting stories and breaking the rules only a little. She hasn't had to confront what other desires she might have for her life, or think about the fate she's stolen, until one day, on a provincial road, she has a chance encounter with a reluctant bride.

Summary
“Have you heard?” Old Luo asked suddenly, cutting though Wei Shou’s dismayed shrieks. He was desultorily stirring the contents of the pot, with a look on his face that probably didn't bode well for the quality of their dinner
“Little Guo as the new general?” Ouyang asked. “I’ve heard. Not even the Prince of Radiance can save us from failure in those hands.”
“You could stand to talk a little more quietly,” Old Luo said, but he couldn’t quite conceal a smirk. “I didn’t meant those news. Word is that a clouds and water monk wandered into the city, stole a horse, pissed off Little Guo and was conscripted into the army - say, are you alright?”
“Fine,” Ouyang said. The words came out a little muffled, because he still had his face buried in his hands, and a little choked, because he was still laughing. There you are, he thought.
Ouyang reunites with his family, joins the Red Turbans, befriends people on purpose and ends up in command of an army that actually likes him.
Not necessarily in that order.

Ayushiridara wasn’t worried about Wang Baoxiang.
He had simply gotten used to him - to being accosted every few days at a party, or to getting a message asking to come over. Or not even asking, not in so many words. Just a picture of Baoxiang in one of his stupid, almost-see through lacy shirts pouting at the camera in a way that he probably thought was alluring but was really just pathetic.

Baoxiang had just unburied a jar of fragrant wine and settled himself in the roots of a peach tree to drink and watch the sunset when a martial god crash-landed in his backyard.

When Ouyang is accused of murder and he agrees to investigate he's dragged back into the world he'd left behind.

Summary
Even after close to four weeks, Anharion wasn’t used to the weight of the Collar around his neck. He found his fingers straying to it, again and again, almost unwillingly. Every time, he expected to find it searingly cold, and every time he was shocked to find it as warm as flesh. He traced the front, where rubies shone like spilled blood, and said, “You could have made it beautiful.”
“No,” Sarcean said, very quietly. “I couldn’t have.”
“You could keep me under its influence always.”
“I couldn’t do that, either.”

Summary
“You, monk,” Ouyang said, “what’s your name?
“Xu Da,” the monk said. His voice sounded off, as though he was only half present. He looked at Ouyang with wide, unfocused eyes that sharpened only slowly. “I know you,” he said. “Lord Esen’s eunuch.”
The words brought a spasm of pain to Ouyang’s breast. In an instant, he was transported back to that ger, with the copper stink of blood thick in his nostrils, its bitter taste filling his mouth, Esen’s heaving body held in his arms, feeling his own fate unspool like a ruined tapestry. “Lord Esen is dead,” he said. He’d died a senseless death, and once the funeral rites had been performed, Chaghan had punished his son’s eunuch with fifty blows of the heavy rod for failing to protect him and thrown him out to starve in the streets.
Ouyang is part of the bandit group Xu Da joins after the monastery burns down.

Summary
“I did not mean her.” And then, with an oddly tender smile, “Visander, no one who saw you could mistake you for a girl of sixteen.”
This was an obvious lie: almost everyone who looked at Visander saw Katherine. He had traveled for weeks with Sinclair’s men, undetected. He did not point any of this out. What he said, instead, was, “You offered to teach me to dance, once.”
Phillip’s smile turned crooked. “I did, didn’t I?” he said, and drew even closer. He put his hand to Visander’s waist. He had touched him like this once before. When he’d taught him to shoot. “Put down that sword of yours, and I will show you.”
Phillip teaches Visander to dance.

Summary
After his death, Esen-Temur wakes up in his ten-year-old body, just weeks before the extermination of the Ouyang clan, with all the memories of the next decade and a half of his life.
He doesn't necessarily do anything useful with this knowledge, but that might be for the best.
With effort, he cracked his eyes open. Unfamiliar faces thronged around him, in the familiar livery of the residence of the prince of Henan. “Ouyang,” he gasped, the word tearing at his throat. “General Ouyang, where is he?”
The touches returned, gentler than before. “Don’t worry, my lord,” a soft, soothing voice said. “There’s no reason to be afraid any more. The Great Khan has him. He must be dead by now.”
The words were like a blade, slipping back into his wound. He could barely breathe around them, the white-hot pain they brought. Dead already. How could the Great Khan have captured him so swiftly? How long had Esen been unconscious? How had he even survived? He was so sure he’d been facing his death, held close in Ouyang’s arms, trembling as his warm, delicate fingers wiped the blood from his face.

Summary
Shen Qingqiu had been certain, the night before, as he’d let himself drift, that he would never wake again. Instead, he was awake. He could feel sunlight on his face. He had all his limbs, and the bed was soft, and there was no pain save, perhaps, the deep, pleasant burn of muscles well-exercised.
And there was a hand touching him.
After his death as Luo Binghe’s prisoner, the original Shen Qingqiu wakes up in Scum Villain’s universe, in the same body Shen Yuan trasmigrated into. A body Shen Yuan has not vacated.Faced with a world in which all it took for his sect to thrive, for Yue Qingyuan to live and for Luo Binghe to avoid turning into the scourge of the realms was for someone to take his place and live his life in his stead, Shen Jiu finds himself having to confront old hurts, his own accountability and the inevitability of human (and demonic) nature.
