Will turned to face him. “I know, Mike. I know.” He still spoke in a whisper, reaching a hand forward to set on Mike’s shoulder. “I don’t think that was why the dream hurt so much.” He squeezed Mike’s arm and then pulled his hand away. “I think it’s more that I miss the way you used to be. I miss when we’d laugh at a dream of you calling something I did genuinely dumb. Because you used to really care, I think.”
Mike felt as if he’s been punched in the gut. “I- I still do. I still do.” He whispered, heart pounding.
Will laughed dryly. “Do you? Do you really?” He threw a first down against the sheets. “Because if you cared maybe you’d listen more, and if you’d listen more maybe you’d understand that sometimes what I say isn’t exactly what I mean.”
