Stephanie could feel Gotham crumbling around her. It'd been like that for as long as she could remember. Before her father, before the Bats, before all of it. When she was a little girl and it was just her mother and her, her father never home, her mother refusing to answer questions about him, till she just learned to stop asking. Sometimes, she’d make up stories as to where he was, in the army and deployed, a businessman traveling abroad, always “he’ll be back soon”. She was pretty sure that’s where she got the endless optimism from. At least it appeared endless. Everyone has a breaking point. She hadn’t hit hers. Yet.

Having weird parents sucked. A pretty obvious fact, you'd think, but it sucked today particularly more than any other day. Stephanie felt full of cold. She'd woken up with a sore throat and a blocked nose and honestly, she hadn't wanted to get out of bed at all- and not in her normal way. Her body felt like it was full of wet cement, like gravity wanted her specifically.
But she had to come into school.
Nobody ever let her take any days off.

Summary
Alternate universe where instead of John and Mary Grayson dying and Dick getting adopted by Bruce Wayne, Zitka the elephant breaks the Flying Grayson's fall and they survive, albiet injured heavily. Now they live next to the Todds. Surprisingly, or maybe unsurprisingly, this sets of a chain reaction where the batkids find each other again.
