Fifteen was an eventful year for Ian. A lot of firsts. All in close proximity but in no particular order: he got drunk for the first time, took a life for the first time, had his first kiss, and had a gun pulled on him for the first time—although that last one was probably the real start of it all. The start of everything. Some angry middle-aged man had stormed out of his backdoor with a rifle in hand on a Wednesday afternoon, firing once into the sky, then leveling Ian and his cross country teammates in his sights.

Today feels weird. Anthony feels weird. It doesn’t rain in LA, not in the way it does elsewhere, so Anthony usually enjoys that. It makes him feel renewed. Today it makes him feel heavy. Makes him feel like even the humid air is clinging to him, weighing him down.
He got benched. Anthony doesn’t get benched. The only person who can bench him is Ian because Anthony only listens to Ian, although even that feels closer and closer to breaking these days. There’s no contract between them other than the blood they’ve shed, their unequal balance, their strange and particular bond that has always been called odd or in some lost and dead voices that made a few too many mistakes: “weird, freaky kink shit.”
Well, they weren’t exactly wrong, to be fair.

“Anthony, no!” Ian cried, snapping his fingers at his partner, like Anthony was some misbehaving dog and not ruthlessly tearing into poor, farmer Shareen’s cow like it was a bag of chips. Ian wasn’t for sure how they were going to reimburse her for her prized cow of their small town. He knew they turned their heads at some squirrely hijinks that occurred between Ian and Anthony, but this one probably wasn’t going to get a free pass. Like, that one time Anthony died and Ian became literally deranged and dabbled in dark magic and maybe sacrificed himself to bring back said partner and maybe fucked on his grave to really seal the deal that there were no take-backs?

A handful of hours later, Shayne received the following text from Damien: “I think there’s a hidden meaning.” and the picture that came through next made Shayne grimace with disgust. It looked like a seedy, back alley that was most definitely downtown vibes and the focal point was that of a corpse hanging from their entrails from a fire escape, and written on the brick wall behind the corpse in runny blood was a message of: ‘Fuck off.’
Anthony sure was cranky that day.
It only took them six-years to successfully find him and now, Ian and Anthony were having another domestic, along while trying to take down some nameless gang that decided to fuck with their crew.
