"You’re crazy, the temperature is fine,” Dan mutters, but he’s already walking towards the thermostat.
“Easy for you to say, you’re wearing your fluffy, warm fleece,” Phil says as soon as Dan’s sitting again.
Dan, who was already halfway on his way to look back at his screen, freezes and gives him the dirtiest side glance, immediately catching on.
Phil really wants a medium fleece for his birthday. And he's going to get one.

Phil shouldn’t – the last time he’d tried doing this, Dan had been grumpy for the entire day, but he didn’t care. He gently wrapped both his hands around the laptop balancing on Dan’s leg and took it, putting it down on the table before folding down the screen.
Dan watched it go with his lips hanging open slightly, then glanced at Phil.
“I’m doing it again?” he asked.

Summary
It was hard to be authentic, to joke around, to tread that line between keeping your private life private, while sharing it just enough to remain interesting for the people they both knew only watched to learn about it, when you had to walk on eggshells.
And Dan knew, of course, that the eggshells were all his. Strewn around the floor, jagged and painful, like a little parcours he’d built just for Phil, to keep him away, keep him at a safe distance.
