She called Joel "a guy" when it came to getting an extra slice of pie or getting outside of Jackson's walls when she needed a day off of school, when she couldn’t fucking stomach it anymore. He told her to cut it out whenever she called him that. It was a bit. She liked all of their bits these days. “He’ll get you out too.”
“I’m Ellie," she volunteers though she doesn't want to. This woman isn’t an enemy. She’s as caged in as Ellie, worn down to the point that she barely had her wits left about her. There was a look in people’s eyes when they got that way, when they’d started giving up hope. Ellie would fucking know.
The woman shakes something loose from her bones, digs her teeth against her lip before she answers, “I’m Sarah.”
Ellie snorts. “Yeah,” she says with only the edges of humor clinging on. “He’ll definitely fucking save you.”

There was a movie Sarah watched with her friends before about a teenage girl who wants to be thirty. What had she said? Thirty, flirty, and thriving. Sarah snorts, wrings out the final shirt, climbs onto the fire escape, and begins pinning the wet items to the line there. Try thirty, still living with your dad after surviving the actual end of the world, raising your 10-year-old sister, and, some winters, barely surviving. It doesn't have the same ring.
A little AU where Sarah survives outbreak night and sixteen years later lives a relatively quiet life with her dad and sister Ellie in the Boston QZ. When they're forced outside the wall to save Ellie, Sarah has to fight in ways she hasn't before for her family to survive.

Legs and arms are tucked close to their bodies, wrinkled skin delicate and soft. Sarah’s a rich golden brown, and Ellie’s the palest peach. Sarah’s hair is a honey-gold hue that floats in wispy curls like a cloud around her head. Ellie’s brown hair is light, downy, and barely there. Both girls are facing inward toward each other, their tiny bow lips squished into pouts from how their cheeks are resting on him. Joel watches as their hands bump against each other in their sleep and suddenly open, tiny fingers stretching, searching until they find one another, and then they are clasping, interlocking until they’re holding hands.
Joel feels his heart skip and a warmth pool in his chest.
IE: Sarah and Ellie are both Premature babies in the same NICU. Joel and Naomi (His Wife) end up fostering Ellie when she has nowhere to go home.
