"He sits up as he breathes in, but it’s stuttery, like he can’t seem to make his lungs expand correctly, caught between a sob and a gasp.
He could feel it in the ache of his bones, the pounding of his head and the dryness of his throat. There are tears in his eyes, falling in rivers onto the pillow, and there’s sweat soaking up the sheets making his blankets and pajamas cling to his legs.Night terrors. A bad dream.
There’s nothing else to it really.

Summary
Preening was the most intimate ritual in avian cultures. Done only by family and partners, it was more than simple hygiene for avians. It was a gesture of trust and love. There were very specific customs about where they were done, what words were spoken to cue the ritual, and who could do it. Traditions varied slightly, but the core concepts remained the same. Among avians, requests to preen and be preened were expected to be semi-frequent, in order to maintain the deep bonds that avians kept with each other.

“If the Current Patterns remain,” Guide spoke forcefully, before continuing in a normal voice, “Then yes, at least two or three of your family have less than six weeks to live.”
Dick forced himself to think. She wouldn’t have just told him that to torment him, would she? Why bother? Besides, it felt like a message. “Is there a way to change the current Pattern?”
“There are several ways.”
“Is there anything I can do? To change the Pattern?”
“That depends on what you are willing to risk.”
“Anything. Everything.”
“Anything?” He was pretty sure she was raising her eyebrow.
Deals with Supernatural Entities. Someday he was going to learn his lesson. “Anything that is mine to give.” He was willing to die to protect total strangers. He certainly wasn’t going to hesitate to save his family.
Guide nodded. “Then we have a chance.”
