Summary
Quaritch and Lo’ak stare at the broken basket lying in the center of the Marui.
A basket that Jake had just finished crafting after three whole weeks of gathering materials from various trees in the forest.
A basket he was going to give to the Olo’eyktan as a thank you for allowing them to stay with the Metkayina during this time of war.
“Well, shit.” Quaritch finally says.
“Dad, I am so fucked,” Lo’ak says in horror.

Summary
His mama had cried twice in his life, both times when Neteyam had nearly died.
He hadn’t cried when he was in labor, hadn’t cried when he had an arrow through his leg, nothing.
But here he was, cradling Lo’ak like he was a little kid again, and sobbing.

Summary
“What are you trying to say,” Quaritch growls, “that I should just fuck off? Fly away into the sunset and forget about,” he waves an arm at Bridgehead, “all of this?”
“Why not?” Jake asks. Then, in a moment of daring, he holds up his tswin, and together they watch the delicate pink tendrils dance in search of a partner. “There’s a whole world out there, something greater, that you can be a part of and belong to. You just have to See.”

Summary
“Jake, you throw something again—”
“And you’ll do fucking what, Miles?”
“Princess, you’re getting on my last fucking nerve right now.”
Neteyam winces.
Dad sounded like he was getting angry rather than just irritated now.

Summary
Jake settles himself down on the bench and when he looks up, his heart damn near stops because wow, now this was a great view of Quaritch.
The older man towered over him and Jake could see every plane of his abdomen from this angle.
Quaritch raises an eyebrow. “You have to grab the bar to start the set, corporal.”
Jake nods. “Yes, sir, sorry.”
Jake grabs the bar and starts his set, trying to think about anything but Quaritch or his other body undergoing surgery.
