“Cait, don’t let that slip,” Vi’s voice is soft but urgent. So is the gentle pressure she exerts on Caitlyn’s elbow, coaxing it back up. “You want the swelling to go down.”
“I know,” Caitlyn mutters. This is hardly her first shiner, but she dutifully follows Vi’s instructions, pressing the towel back against her eye with a wince. It hurts, the flesh is tender and painful, but what’s worse is how it impairs her vision completely. It’s hard, not panicking, when her mind and body both flinch at the cold and the pain and the darkness.

Summary
When her father told her they were to have a guest stay in their home for the whole summer– a princess– Vi nearly gagged on the spot. He had simply laughed, rubbed the top of her head, and explained the importance of this union for the kingdom. Whatever that meant.
I bet she doesn’t wrestle or hunt or box, either, Vi thinks ruefully. (She would find many years later, begrudgingly, that this is not true).
Their parents seem to see their exchange far differently. Their eyes crinkle at the corners and their snickers are hardly subtle. And both of them seem to enjoy this torture, wanting to elongate it until they’ve reached their limits.
This is going to be the longest summer of Vi’s entire life.OR:

Caitlyn’s breath hitched, and her nails dug into Vi’s hips, hard enough to leave marks. “Shut up,” she hissed, but her movements grew less precise, her focus splintering.
Vi’s grin widened as she rocked her hips up, grinding herself against the strap in a slow, deliberate motion that made Caitlyn shudder. “What’s wrong, sheriff?” Vi drawled, her voice dripping with mockery. “Losing control? Or is it that you’re imagining how good it’s gonna feel when you finally—”
