Summary
Steve pauses, and Dustin looks back at him before he says, “because I really missed you.”
Dustin is pinned by the searing intensity of his gaze, feels so sure that Steve can see every part of his heart open and on display. It’s all too much to bear but he’s unable to tear his own eyes away. He stares back too afraid to even blink, in case the moment slips away while his eyes are closed. The tangle of anger and grief fade for just a moment as his heart screams out, I love you I love you I love you I love you. He feels the words heavy on his tongue, desperate to spill out. But if he tells Steve the truth, this one secret he’s held for years, he knows that it will break whatever fragile thing they’re rebuilding beyond repair.
--
Or...Dustin and Steve have repaired their relationship at the Squawk, but Dustin still harbors one more secret. With the world literally collapsing around them, he doesn't know if he'll ever find a way to reveal it.

Summary
Max stares with wide eyes as two boys fall through the door. The shorter one (but barely, maybe no more than an inch shorter) is wearing a varsity jacket and stumbling over his feet as he walks backwards. His arms are looped around the taller boy’s neck, and he’s still laughing. The taller boy wears a vest layered over a leather jacket, has untamed hair, and looks at the shorter boy with eyes that make Max feel like she’s intruding.
Both boys’ clothes are slightly rumpled, and she only now realizes that the taller boy’s hands are resting on the other’s waist. They haven’t seemed to notice Max or El, and the taller boy uses his foot to kick the door shut.
El calmly says, “Steve, we are watching Dracula. Would you and Eddie like to join us?”
Steve and Eddie jerk apart, finally noticing Max and El in the room. They glance at each other, a whole conversation held in that one look. It is, apparently, a conversation that Eddie loses, because he sighs as Steve grins. “How far are you?” Steve asks, kicking off his shoes before collapsing onto the couch.
(A/N: Strongly suggest reading the other two parts first to avoid any confusion.)

Summary
Hawkins, Indiana is not the place for open wounds.
Steve knows, better than most, that this is stupid. Sitting alone on the hood of his beamer at the quarry, back against the windshield, staring out at the tree line—it’s stupid. It’s a dumb fucking decision. Whatever’s in the woods can probably smell the still-healing gash in his hairline from a dinner plate, the last of a yellowing bruise under his eye. It can probably smell weakness, too, in the raw, jagged crack Nancy had punched through his chest. (It’s a metaphor. Or some shit.)
But Steve doesn’t want to go home. And all the kids are at the dance. So.
He’s here. For the fourth night this week, he’s got a bat in his hand, pretending like it doesn’t scare the shit out of him—like his heart’s not rattling out of his ribs. Better than feeling powerless, he guesses. (And better him than one of the younger kids.)
Or; Steve goes looking for fights he can’t win. Set after the events of season 2–3

Summary
“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty,” Dustin snarks. He rolls his eyes and heaves himself out of the passenger side of the bimmer, slamming the door behind him. He sticks his head through the passenger window, offering Steve a sarcastic sneer. “Have a good nap?”
Steve smacks his lips and swallows hard, but the odd metallic taste doesn’t leave his mouth. Dustin huffs at his lack of response and smacks the flat of his palm against the side of the car. Usually, Steve would reprimand him for that, tell the kid something about the paint job, or dents, but Dustin storms out of Steve’s sight before he can catch up to the situation. Steve’s slumped over the steering wheel, letting it press into the side of his face and his ribs, a radiating ache, but he knows the moment he moves, the pain will flare into something sharp and unbearable.
He has to bear it
