The anger and snobbery was just the first act of what would shortly be tears. Even Elliot tensed up and understood Grammy F was not being loud in a playful way. He gummed at his fist and remained quietly watchful. Perhaps the baby should have gone back to nanny.
“Mama, I think this might come down to her age more than the money,” Penelope said softly. “Mrs. Varley is a widow like yourself. Her husband was a working man and had little to leave to her. They didn’t have children together. When she thinks about old age, she might worry what she will do when she cannot work six days a week. A retirement fund is not easily saved when one makes only so much. Daily needs still cost if she is to have any quality of life.”
Mama put her hand to her chin, turning back to look at Penelope in disbelief. “Did she honestly think we would not look after her?!”
The estate was rebounding well, but part of that was having three married daughters and connections to other ton families. Having a Bridgerton behind the investments was also a commendation for the new stability.
